2025 Fantasy Outlook
Playing on a one-year, fully-guaranteed $1.81 million deal, Pacheco will likely have some notable role in the 2026 Lions offense. He's still likely a downgrade from the previous Detroit RB2, however -- David Montgomery was overqualified as the backup to Jahmyr Gibbs, whereas Pacheco is probably correctly slotted as a backup at this point. Pacheco's crazy motor and otherwise standout combination of raw power and speed didn't show up often enough in the box score in Kansas City, the washed-up version of Kareem Hunt slowly prying away the RB1 role with the Chiefs over the last two years. Pacheco's intense running style also opens him up to injury more than most, so he isn't especially reliable in any regard. Availability and consistency are both ongoing questions for the former Rutgers standout, though Pacheco would prove a good Montgomery replacement if he can somehow recapture the form he showed in his first two NFL seasons before the harsh decline since. Being signed by Lions
Pacheco has agreed to terms on a contract with Detroit, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports.
ANALYSIS
Pacheco fits into the Lions' backfield alongside superstar running back Jahmyr Gibbs, replacing David Montgomery. In his first two seasons with Kansas City, Pacheco averaged 4.7 YPC and scored 12 rushing TDs in 31 regular-season game as a bruising between-the-tackles runner. In part due to injuries, however, the 2022 seventh-round pick has now logged back-to-back seasons with less than 500 rushing yards and under 4.0 YPC, with only two rushing scores in 20 regular-season contests. Pacheco could rebound in Detroit with opposing defenses honing in on Gibbs, but he may not see the same touch volume that Montgomery did.

The Chiefs are careful to consistently invest in their offensive line, allowing them to provide consistently good blocking and a favorable setup for whoever is playing running back. Even so, Pacheco has proven a uniquely good fit for the Chiefs offense since they stole him out of Rutgers in the seventh round of the 2022 Draft. His 4.37 speed makes him a home-run threat, and his violent, high-motor running presents a challenging power component to defenses that are already spread thin by QB Patrick Mahomes. Pacheco's violent running does come with long-term durability concerns, especially wear-and-tear ailments like the shoulder trouble he played through in 2023, though injuries have cost him only two games through two seasons. He can handle every running back task and improved his passing-down work last year, eventually taking at least 70 percent of snaps in each of Kansas City's four playoff contests. His workloads typically haven't been that large during the regular season, but it's not out of the question for 2024 after the Chiefs settled for bringing back Clyde Edwards-Helaire in free agency and then added Samaje Perine shortly before the start of the season.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Stylistic fit in Detroit
Lions general manager Brad Holmes said during an interview Monday on SiriusXM NFL Radio that he's excited about Pacheco's mindset and ability to get tough yards.
ANALYSIS
Pacheco has struggled with efficiency in each of the last two seasons with Kansas City, though that is likely related to a serious leg injury. He's set to replace David Montgomery as the more power-oriented back behind Jahmyr Gibbs, and Pacheco could specifically be used at the goal line and in other short-yardage situations. It's not a surprise that the Lions are talking up their offseason addition, but Pacheco could be in for a bounce-back season given the quality of Detroit's offense.
