Austin brought in three of six targets for eight yards and returned one punt for 14 yards in the Steelers' 30-6 wild-card loss to the Texans on Monday night.
ANALYSIS
Austin's receiving line underscores how suffocating the Texans defense was overall, on a night when Aaron Rodgers was sacked four times and threw for only 146 yards. Austin recorded 31 receptions for 372 yards and three touchdowns on 55 targets across 14 regular-season games in 2025, adding 15 punt returns for 101 yards. The 2022 fourth-round pick is slated to hit unrestricted free agency at the start of the new league year, and given his unremarkable body of work over his first four seasons, it's likely the Steelers allow him to explore the open market.

Past Fantasy Outlooks

2022
Austin looked like an emerging player through four games last season. During that time, the receiver averaged three catches and 33 yards. However, the Steelers offense was a mess. The team relied heavily on their rushing attack. That led to Austin catching six passes for 44 yards over his last 13 games. Although it’s possible that Austin sees an increase in snaps this season, but the receiver may have to hold off rookie Roman Wilson for a prominent role in the offense. Also, it is worrisome that Arthur Smith is the offensive coordinator. The new coach will likely continue to feature the run game. As a result, Austin may not see enough targets to have a breakout season.
Austin topped 1,000 yards in his final two collegiate seasons at Memphis in 2020 and 2021, but he sustained a foot injury during training camp in August and began the year on injured reserve. The fourth-round pick returned to practice in early October but wasn't activated from IR. He's expected to be healthy heading into 2023 but will have additional competition for targets after the Steelers acquired Allen Robinson during the offseason. Austin was productive in college but could have trouble landing a fantasy-relevant role this year due to the deep receiving corps in Pittsburgh.
While the Steelers selected George Pickens in the second round of the 2022 NFL Draft, Austin was a fourth-round selection by the team after topping 1,000 receiving yards in his final two collegiate seasons at Memphis. The 23-year-old impressed with a 4.32-second time in the 40-yard dash at the combine, and his speed should allow him to compete for a role with the Steelers as a rookie. While Diontae Johhnson, Chase Claypool and Pickens should be ahead of Austin on the depth chart heading into the season, the Memphis product could have a chance to compete for targets in Pittsburgh's pass-heavy offense if/when injuries hit.

Top-40 free agent per Popper
WRPittsburgh Steelers
February 19, 2026
Austin is ranked 40th among available free agents by Daniel Popper of The Athletic.
ANALYSIS
Popper believes Austin could break out in a system that gets him the ball in space more frequently. The 5-foot-9, 162-pound wide receiver didn't play a significant role in the Steelers' offense, posting just 372 receiving yards in 14 regular-season games in 2025. Popper projects a three-year, $33 million contract for Austin, who is set to turn 27 years old in March.
