Minimal offensive work in 2025
Conklin caught seven of 10 targets for 101 yards and rushed once for two yards across 13 regular-season games in 2025.
ANALYSIS
The 30-year-old from Central Michigan was a healthy scratch in five of the Chargers' final six games this season, including the wild-card loss to the Patriots, as he slid down the depth chart following the emergence of rookie Oronde Gadsden. Conklin posted his lowest receiving yardage total since 2019 but still averaged 14.4 yards per reception, the second-highest mark of his career. Set to become a free agent this offseason, Conklin could find work with a team in need of tight-end depth ahead of the 2026 campaign.

Conklin signed a one-year contract with the Chargers in the offseason after a bittersweet final season with the Jets. After three consecutive seasons with exactly 87 targets dating back to his fourth and final campaign in Minnesota, Conklin dipped to just 72 targets, and his 51 catches and 449 yards were also Conklin’s lowest marks over the past four years. On the other hand, Conklin set a new career high with four touchdown catches, including being on the receiving end of Aaron Rodgers’ 500th career touchdown pass. Playing with Justin Herbert should present an upgrade over Rodgers at this stage of the respective quarterbacks’ careers, but the 30-year-old Conklin will face competition for playing time from Will Dissly, who had a career-high 481 receiving yards for the Chargers in 2024. Conklin has a higher ceiling, having exceeded 550 receiving yards three times, but neither TE is a particularly fearsome red-zone weapon, and the position accounted for only two of Herbert’s 23 touchdown passes last season. Rookie fifth-round pick Oronde Gadsden could also compete for targets at the position.

Working behind Dissly
Conklin has worked behind Will Dissly in OTAs and minicamp, according to Spencer Schultz of USA Today.
ANALYSIS
Dissly has retained the starting role, though Schultz believes Conklin could still play a prominent role for his new team. Conklin could still make a push for the top spot on the tight end depth chart in training camp and preseason, but Dissly's familiarity with the offense seems to have given him the early edge in this position battle.
