2025 Projections
2025 Fantasy Outlook
Lance enters his second consecutive season as the top backup to Justin Herbert with the Chargers, a role that saw him start just one of his four regular-season appearances in 2025 (Week 18 against the Broncos). Versus Denver, he completed just 20 of 44 pass attempts (45 percent) for 136 yards, zero touchdowns and one interception, while also rushing nine times for 69 yards and fumbling once – a rough performance, though it came against one of the league’s top defenses and with Los Angeles resting several key receiving weapons. Since flaming out in San Francisco, the 2021 No. 3 overall pick has benefited from multiple developmental seasons with the Cowboys and Chargers, and his dual-threat skill set still offers intriguing upside if he’s called upon to start in place of Herbert in 2026. Back with Bolts
The Chargers signed Lance to a one-year contract worth up to $6.75 million Saturday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
Lance is returning for a second campaign in Los Angeles following stints with San Francisco and Dallas. As Justin Herbert's backup last season, Lance saw action in four games (including a Week 18 start versus Denver), completing 27 of 57 pass attempts for 226 yards and a 0:1 TD:INT while adding 17 carries for 85 yards. The mobile quarterback should be the frontrunner to back up Herbert.

The Cowboys took a flyer on Lance just before Week 1 last year, trading a fourth-round pick to the 49ers for the 2021 third overall pick. Lance, though, not only never took a snap, he never made the active roster, suiting up only as the emergency third-sting QB every game. If his accuracy and anticipation have caught up to his physical gifts, perhaps Lance can beat out Cooper Rush to back up Dak Prescott this season. At 6-4, 226, Lance has both size and a strong arm, and his rushing ability adds to his potential. Lance, 24, is still young -- younger than rookie QBs Bo Nix and Michael Penix, n fact -- which is also why the Cowboys were willing to pay his $4.25 roster bonus for 2024.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Likely getting Week 18 start
Lance is expected to be under center for the Chargers in their regular-season finale, with Daniel Popper of The Athletic reporting that Justin Herbert won't get the start.
ANALYSIS
The Chargers are locked into a wild-card spot, so coach Jim Harbaugh is expected to give Herbert a rest ahead of the postseason. Lance has made three appearances so far in 2025 and gone 7-for-13 on pass attempts for 90 yards without a touchdown or interception while also adding 16 rushing yards. Lance will be facing a Broncos squad that can claim a first-round bye and home-field advantage through the AFC side of the playoffs with a win.
