Thompson was a seventh-round pick in 2022 and saw sporadic playing time as Tua Tagovailoa's backup in Miami over the past few seasons. Thompson signed a contract with the Steelers during the offseason, but he could struggle to make the roster since the team brought in Aaron Rodgers, Mason Rudolph and Will Howard. Thompson (hamstring) was placed on injured reserve Wednesday, Teresa Varley of the Steelers' official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Thompson popped up on the Steelers' injury report with a hamstring injury prior to their Week 1 win over the Jets, and the issue now appears serious enough for him to land on IR. Pittsburgh's emergency third quarterback will now miss at least four games, with his earliest possible return coming in Week 7 against the Bengals. With rookie Will Howard (hand) also on IR, the Steelers' quarterback room now consists of just Aaron Rodgers and Mason Rudolph.

He didn't get any playing time in 2023 after the addition of Mike White to serve as Tua Tagovailoa's top backup, but salary cap situations could mean that won't be a long-term bandaid.
