2025 Fantasy Outlook
Written off by many after a disastrous 2023 rookie campaign, Johnston made major contributions to the Chargers in 2024 and 2025, putting up receiving lines of 55-711-8 and 51-735-8. Drops have been an issue, and his target volume hasn't been consistent, but Johnston has done well with his downfield opportunities overall, scoring eight TDs the past two years on targets traveling 20-plus yards downfield. Last year, Johnston seemed to be breaking out early in the season, with averages of 5.2 catches for 75.4 yards and 0.8 TDs over the first five weeks (8.0 targets per game). He then missed Week 6 with a hamstring injury, slumped during the middle of the season, and was inconsistent down the stretch while dealing with an injury-ravaged offensive line. Johnston's season-long average of 12.5 PPR points was a career-high, but he averaged just 9.0 PPR points and 37.8 yards over his final 10 games (including playoffs). He'll have a chance to get back on track under new Chargers offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel, though 2025 second-round pick Tre' Harris could perhaps make a bid for Johnston's starting job if Johnston struggles in the new system. Johnston has improved his yards-per-catch average every season and finished 21st in the NFL at 14.4 yards per reception during the 2025 campaign. After being drafted by the Chargers in the first round last year, Johnston had a terrible rookie season. Once Mike Williams went down with an ACL tear Week 3, Johnston typically played a lot of snaps but caught just 38 of 67 targets (56.7 percent) and surpassed 30 yards in four games. In the last five weeks of the season, Johnston averaged 58 snaps but failed to reach 30 yards even once. Despite the Year 1 struggles, Johnston should get another chance to prove himself in 2024 under a new coaching staff. Fellow WRs Keenan Allen and Mike Williams are no longer with the Chargers, replaced by second-round pick Ladd McConkey and 27-year-old DJ Chark (now on his fourth team in four years). Johnston and Joshua Palmer are the returning wideouts with experience as NFL starters, so it'll likely come down to those two, McConkey and Chark taking most of the WR snaps under running-game-focused offensive coordinator Greg Roman.
