24-Year-Old Wide ReceiverWR
Los Angeles Chargers
2025 Fantasy Outlook
Johnston arrived in Los Angeles in 2023 as the 21st overall pick and spent most of his rookie season in the starting lineup, drawing targets on a meager 13.7 percent of routes and catching just 56.7 percent of those chances. His numbers improved last season under a new coaching staff, with the yards per route more than doubling from 0.88 to 1.85, but there were still some ugly weeks along the way, including an 0-for-5 showing in the playoff loss to Houston. Johnston scored eight TDs and averaged 5.4 yards after the catch, but he pulled in just 60.4 percent of his targets while struggling to track balls downfield. The Chargers responded by drafting Tre Harris in the second round and later signing Keenan Allen, giving Johnston tough competition for perimeter snaps in a balanced offense where Ladd McConkey is the clear No. 1 receiver. While there isn't much chance of major volume growth relative to last year, Johnston does have some shot to maintain his role and improve the per-target numbers. Read Past Outlooks

Johnston secured three of six targets for 20 yards during Sunday's 16-3 loss to the Patriots in the wild-card round.
ANALYSIS
Johnston finished second on the Chargers in terms of targets behind Keenan Allen (eight), but like the rest of Los Angeles' pass-catching offense which Ladd McConkey led with just 32 receiving yards, he was inefficient versus New England's defense. Still, during the regular season, Johnston demonstrated improved chemistry with quarterback Justin Herbert, as the 2023 first-round pick managed a respectable 51-735-8 line on 84 targets across 14 regular-season appearances. Johnston also was hampered by shin, hamstring, groin and shoulder injuries during the second half of the campaign. He'll look to take another step forward in 2026, which is currently positioned as the final year of his rookie deal with the Chargers, though the team could exercise his fifth-year option this offseason.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2023
After being drafted by the Chargers in the first round last year, Johnston had a terrible rookie season. Once Mike Williams went down with an ACL tear Week 3, Johnston typically played a lot of snaps but caught just 38 of 67 targets (56.7 percent) and surpassed 30 yards in four games. In the last five weeks of the season, Johnston averaged 58 snaps but failed to reach 30 yards even once. Despite the Year 1 struggles, Johnston should get another chance to prove himself in 2024 under a new coaching staff. Fellow WRs Keenan Allen and Mike Williams are no longer with the Chargers, replaced by second-round pick Ladd McConkey and 27-year-old DJ Chark (now on his fourth team in four years). Johnston and Joshua Palmer are the returning wideouts with experience as NFL starters, so it'll likely come down to those two, McConkey and Chark taking most of the WR snaps under running-game-focused offensive coordinator Greg Roman.
Johnston is the No. 1 WR prototype in this year's rookie class, while fellow first-rounders Jaxon Smith-Njigba, Jordan Addison and Zay Flowers lack ideal measurables. At 6-3, 208, Johnston put up a 40.5-inch vertical and 134-inch broad jump at the 2023 combine, later running a reported 4.50 40 at his pro day. That after totaling 634 yards in eight games as a sophomore and 1,069 yards in 14 games as a junior, albeit with a limited route tree and dependence on the deep ball. Fortunately for him, he landed with one of the better deep throwers in the league, though Justin Herbert's volume skewed toward the short passing game under former OC Joe Lombardi. New OC Kellen Moore typically had his offenses in Dallas move at a fast pace while taking plenty of shots downfield, and he may favor three-wide sets more than ever after the Chargers used the 21st overall pick on a talented receiver to join Keenan Allen and Mike Williams. It's a situation where Johnston merely profiles as the No. 3, which makes him unlikely to see more than 5-6 targets per game if Allen and Williams both stay healthy (which they didn't last season).

Trade candidate for Bolts?
WRLos Angeles Chargers
January 23, 2026
Bill Barnwell of ESPN.com lists Johnston as one of his trade candidates for the 2026 offseason.
ANALYSIS
Johnston got off to a hot start to the 2025 regular season, hauling in 22 catches on 36 targets for 337 yards and four touchdowns across the Chargers' first four games. He wasn't able to sustain those numbers over the course of the season, and Barnwell believes that the dip in production for Johnston had to do with injuries on the Chargers' offensive line -- affecting Justin Herbert's time to throw -- and the emergence of rookie tight end Oronde Gadsden as a vertical threat. Barnwell profiles Johnston as a power slot receiver, and with Ladd McConkey and Keenan Allen logging more snaps out of the slot, Barnwell believes a change of scenery might be best for Johnston.
