ANALYSIS
With Aaron Jones (hip) ruled out for the Vikings' regular-season finale, Mason led the backfield with his best yardage total since Week 3. Fullback C.J. Ham vultured a one-yard TD run in the second quarter, however. Mason finishes his first season in Minnesota with 758 rushing yards and six touchdowns on 159 carries, and with both Jones and Mason on affordable contracts in 2026, the duo will likely remain in some form of timeshare next season.

No player better represents the idea that just about any running back can thrive in Kyle Shanahan's offense than Mason. Undrafted out of Georgia Tech in 2022, Mason has averaged 5.6 yards per carry for the 49ers, and while he lacks breakaway speed, his power and sheer refusal to go down have resulted in some impressive yards after contact in a small sample. The 49ers backfield seemingly got more crowded this offseason when they drafted Isaac Guerendo in the fourth round, but it ended up working out well for Mason when Guerendo and Elijah Mitchell both missed most of training camp with injuries. Mitchell was then place on season-ending injured reserve in late August, leaving Mason as the No. 2 running back behind Christian McCaffrey to start the season.

The Vikings have informed Aaron Jones that he will be released at the start of the new league year March 11 barring a trade, per Adam Schefter of ESPN, leaving Mason atop the depth chart at running back.
ANALYSIS
Mason led the Vikings with 758 rushing yards in 16 games in 2025, while Jones had just 548 rushing yards in 12 games while being limited by injuries, including a hip injury that kept Jones out of the regular-season finale. While Mason has the inside track on the lead role for 2026, Minnesota's likely to add competition at running back through free agency or the draft.
