Hooker will likely enter his third NFL campaign as the Lions' top backup at quarterback behind Jared Goff. The 27-year-old operated in a similar role in 2024, ultimately appearing in three regular-season games and completing six of nine passes for 62 yards. Hooker flashed his ability as a dual-threat quarterback in college, but he's yet to prove that he's the same player at the pro level. Cut from Carolina's practice squad
The Panthers cut Hooker from the practice squad Tuesday, Kassidy Hill of the team's official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Hooker joined the Panthers' practice squad in late August after being waived by the Lions at the end of training camp. He was elevated to the Panthers' active roster for their Week 8 clash against the Bills to serve as Andy Dalton's backup due to Bryce Young being sidelined with an ankle injury. With Young fully healthy and Dalton and Mike White also on the active roster, the Panthers are no longer in need of Hooker's services, but the 2023 third-rounder should garner interest from teams looking to add a scout team quarterback.

A third-round pick in last year’s draft, Hooker spent most of his rookie season recovering from an ACL injury from November 2022. He was finally healthy enough to suit up as the emergency No. 3 QB the final three regular-season games and in the playoffs, though he never took a snap. Jared Goff, who signed a contract extension this offseason after leading the Lions to the NFC championship game, is secure as the starter, but Hooker should take over the backup spot this season. Hooker, 26, has a strong arm, though perhaps not elite, and should regain most of his mobility and athleticism post-injury. At 6-4, 208, Hooker has prototypical QB size, and the Lions offer a strong supporting cast. It’s an intriguing setup should Hooker be pressed into action.
