Irving could face increased competition for touches, as NFL reporter Jordan Schultz reports Monday that Kenneth Gainwell is signing a two-year, $14 million contract with the Buccaneers.
ANALYSIS
Irving missed seven games due to foot and shoulder injuries in 2025, and he ceded touches to Sean Tucker and Rachaad White after returning. While Irving ultimately led the Buccaneers with 173 rushing attempts, he scored only one rushing touchdown compared to White's four on 132 carries and Tucker's seven on 86 carries. White and Tucker are both free agents, but the addition of Gainwell suggests Irving could be ticketed for less of a workhorse role in 2026, as Gainwell racked up 1,023 yards from scrimmage and eight total touchdowns on 114 carries and 85 targets in the 2025 regular season with the Steelers.

Size-adjusted athleticism is generally an important variable when evaluating NFL running back prospects, so despite excellent production in college it was a major strike to Irving's draft stock when he logged poor workout numbers last spring at just 192 pounds (4.55-second 40, 29.5-inch vertical, 115-inch broad jump). There are exceptions to every rule, though, and while other running backs might have failed with his athletic profile, there's something unique about Irving that allows him to transcend the otherwise concerning indicators in his testing. His strong skill set was always clear at the collegiate level, where he stood out for both Minnesota and Oregon before the Buccaneers made him a fourth-round pick last spring. The main limitation with Irving pertains to his usage upside rather than his per-touch effectiveness. Playing at 192 pounds hasn't deprived Irving of the power necessary to thrive between the tackles, but it remains to be seen whether he can physically hold up as a workhorse. Irving went over 20 carries in a game just twice in college, so it might be asking a lot for him to maintain the rushing workload he shouldered in his final six healthy games of 2024 (18.8 carries per game).
Irving is a skilled player, both as a runner and receiver, and he was highly productive at both Minnesota and Oregon. The question of his NFL viability is less certain, as Irving tumbled to the fourth round of the 2024 Draft after posting disappointing numbers at the combine. Fellow former Pac-12 back Myles Gaskin could be a cautionary tale -- Gaskin was an exceptionally productive four-year player at Washington, yet in the NFL a lack of power and speed has caught up to him. Following a 4.55-second 40 time at 192 pounds, Irving heads to the NFL with some of the same concerns. He's unlikely to challenge incumbent starter Rachaad White in any meaningful way, but Irving could earn a change-of-pace role in an offense that otherwise lacks backfield talent.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Part-time role expected Sunday
RBTampa Bay Buccaneers
November 26, 2025
Irving, who was listed as a full participant in Wednesday's walkthrough, will be slated for a part-time role if he's active for Sunday's Week 13 matchup against the Cardinals, Scott Smith of the team's official site reports.
ANALYSIS
Offensive coordinator Josh Grizzard compared Irving's potential workload to that which Chris Godwin logged in Sunday night's loss to the Rams, when he played on 25 of 70 snaps in his return from a five-game absence due to a fibula injury. Irving has been out even longer than Godwin -- seven games -- so the abbreviated volume would certainly be within the realm of possibility, especially with two capable backfield mates in Rachaad White and Sean Tucker on hand.
