2026 Projections
2026 Fantasy Outlook
Increased velocity made Weathers a popular sleeper for a period of time last spring before he went down with a left forearm strain. He made his 2025 season debut in mid-May, only to wind up back on the injured list after five starts with a strained lat. The southpaw returned to make three starts in September, pitching to an unsightly 5.27 ERA and 1.68 WHIP over his final 13.2 innings. A first-round pick by the Padres in 2018, Weathers has shown flashes over the years, but the injuries are piling up as he also missed extended time in 2024 with a finger issue. The Marlins seemingly lost patience with Weathers and dealt him to the Yankees, who will be hoping he can stay healthy and clear 100 innings for the first time as a member of the starting rotation in 2026. Knocked around in spring start
Weathers allowed six runs (five earned) on seven hits and two walks while striking out three batters over two innings in a Grapefruit League outing against the Mets on Sunday.
Analysis
Weathers breezed through a scoreless first inning during which he retired the side in order. However, the southpaw got only one out in his second frame, allowing three runs before being pulled. Under spring training rules, Weathers re-entered the contest in the third inning and gave up three more runs (one was unearned) while retiring just two batters. Weathers was great in his previous Grapefruit League appearance, tossing 3.2 scoreless innings with five punchouts, and he's expected to open the regular season in the Yankees' starting rotation.

A left index finger strain put Weathers on the shelf in mid-June and eventually forced a move to the 60-day injured list. Around the extended absence, Weathers showed many good things, including career-best strikeout and walk rates. He returned from his injury to make three starts in September and earned back-to-back wins to close things out on a high note. Weathers, the seventh overall pick in 2020 and son of former big leaguer David Weathers, was traded in 2023 after struggling during his time with the Padres. Miami isn't the best spot for wins, but the southpaw finally enjoyed a taste of success in MLB last season and may now have entered post-post-hype sleeper status. The Marlins will be hoping he can do it again while adding to his workload in 2025.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Drawing trade interest
The Marlins have received strong trade interest in Weathers, Isaac Azout and Kevin Barral of FishOnFirst.com report.
Analysis
Edward Cabrera still seems to be the most likely Marlins starting pitcher to be traded. However, it seems Weathers is also drawing significant interest. The left-hander has pitched well the last two seasons with the Marlins, when healthy, posting a 3.74 ERA and 117:36 K:BB over 125 innings. Weathers was limited to only eight starts in 2025 because of forearm and lat strains.
