Ray Davis

Ray Davis

26-Year-Old Running BackRB
Buffalo Bills
2025 Fantasy Outlook
One might look at Davis' statistics from his 2024 rookie campaign and conclude he was ineffective compared to fellow Bills running backs James Cook and Ty Johnson, but the numbers don't tell the entire story. At 5-foot-9, 220, Davis is the power specialist of the trio, meaning he took on a lot of thankless work while Cook and Johnson got more touches in space. While Davis faced a light box on just 22.1 percent of his carries, Cook and Johnson checked in at 42.5 and 31.7 percent, respectively. Davis averaged just 3.9 yards per carry for the season, but he posted at least 4.3 YPC in each of his three games with double-digit carries -- and his 19 rookie-year targets yielded a 17-189-3 receiving line. He was especially impressive against the Jets in Week 6, gaining 152 yards on 23 touches (58 percent snap share) while Cook sat with a toe injury. As much as Cook is the clear RB1 in Buffalo, and as much as Johnson presses Davis' margins even further, it's arguably Davis who would be best suited to a workhorse role if injuries forced the team's hand at some point. Davis took nine carries for 62 yards without being targeted as a receiver in Sunday's 26-7 win over the Steelers.
ANALYSIS
Davis added 15 yards on his only kick return, failing to recreate the electricity from last week's return TD against the Texans. The 25-year-old backup instead stood out by outproducing his entire rushing yardage total from his 11 previous appearances in one contest. Davis had reached nine carries just twice prior to Week 13, with both occurrences coming in blowouts just like Sunday's. Fantasy managers can safely ignore Davis ahead of next Sunday's tilt against the Bengals.

2024 Fantasy Outlook
Davis is an unusually well-traveled prospect who had three seasons with more than 200 touches and 1,100 yards for three different college programs (Temple, Vanderbilt, Kentucky). At 5-8, 211, his stocky build allows him to withstand more volume than someone might guess at first glance. Davis can use his low center of gravity to bounce off tacklers and avoid the worse ends of hits, saving himself some damage in the process. He also has decent speed (4.52 40), though his other combine numbers were subpar despite Davis being one of the older prospects in his class (he'll turn 25 in November). While incumbent starter James Cook figures to remain the lead back for Buffalo, power running isn't his strong suit and might offer a path for Davis to get involved immediately. The fourth-round pick will first need to earn his spot on the depth chart, competing with incumbent backup Ty Johnson, journeyman Darrynton Evans and undrafted rookie Frank Gore.

Bumps up a spot Sunday
RBBuffalo Bills
August 3, 2025
James Cook didn't practice Sunday for what he called business reasons, per Alaina Getzenberg of ESPN.com, leaving more first-team reps for Davis.
ANALYSIS
Cook has been seeking a new contract throughout the offseason, and while he practiced in the first few days of training camp, the starting running back may now be opting to sit out practices until contract negotiations are resolved. Davis is next in line on the running back depth chart and stands to see more first-team opportunities while Cook sits out.
