2025 Fantasy Outlook
Onwuzurike was relatively healthy in 2024 in what was an injury-riddled season for the Lions defense. The defensive tackle compiled 28 total tackles, including a career-high 1.5 sacks, while also forcing a fumble over 16 regular-season games. With Alim McNeill and DJ Reader returning this year, along with the team selecting Tyleik Williams in the first round of this year's NFL Draft, Onwuzurike likely will have a limited role. Knee - ACL
July 20, 2025
Onwuzurike will miss the 2025 NFL campaign after undergoing surgery for a torn ACL, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports.
ANALYSIS
This is a tough blow for Onwuzurike and the Lions, who were decimated by injuries on defense last year. Onwuzurike was a key part of Detroit's defensive line during the 2024 campaign, playing in 16 regular-season games and recording 16 tackles, including 1.5 sacks, and a forced fumble while logging over 60 percent of the team's defensive snaps 11 times. Presumed starter at defensive tackle Alim McNeill is recovering from a torn ACL himself, and it's unclear if he'll be ready for Week 1 of the upcoming campaign.

Yet to provide much return on Detroit's second-round investment in 2021, Onwuzurike enters his third season in a rotational role after missing all of 2022 with a back injury. Whether he sees most of his time inside or outside of the defensive line remains to be seen, but expectations should remain in check for the high-pedigree player who first needs to earn a role before commanding any fantasy consideration.
Onwuzurike is no lock to be ready for Week 1 after injuring his back during training camp. When healthy, the 2021 second-round draft pick should be a key rotational piece along the Lions' defensive line.
A second-round draft pick out of Washington, Onwuzurike could serve a key role at defensive end as the Lions defense primarily transitions to a 3-4 scheme.

Likely to outperform contract
DTDetroit Lions
March 22, 2025
Daniel Popper of The Athletic believes Onwuzurike's contract with the Lions could be among the best bargains in the 2025 free-agent class.
ANALYSIS
Onwuzurike re-signed with Detroit on a one-year, $5.5 million deal. His 47 pressures and 11.9 pass rush win percentage in 2024 over 16 regular-season games were higher marks than fellow interior defensive linemen Javon Kinlaw and Tershawn Wharton posted. Kinlaw and Wharton both signed for over $15 million per year, with the Commanders and Panthers, respectively.
