Puts in trade request
Richardson (eye) has requested and received permission from the Colts to seek a trade, James Boyd of The Athletic reports.
ANALYSIS
Richardson, the fourth overall pick of the 2023 NFL Draft, has played a total of just 17 games across his tenure with Indianapolis, with injuries playing a significant role in the extent of his missed time. Last summer, the 2023 first-round pick lost his starting job to quarterback Daniel Jones (Achilles), who suffered a season-ending injury midway through the 2025 campaign and was then replaced under center by free agent veteran Philip Rivers. Richardson meanwhile, was placed on injured reserve in October due to a fractured orbital bone of his right eye, but he made enough progress late in the season for the Colts to open his 21-day practice window. Though Richardson ultimately wasn't activated from IR, Boyd relays that the quarterback has regained full vision in the affected eye. Richardson has one year remaining on his rookie deal, and at this stage, his best-case scenario may be getting a fresh start elsewhere with a team that will give him the opportunity to compete for a starting gig in 2026.

Health has been an issue for Richardson since the Colts drafted him fourth overall in 2023. He's missed 17 of 34 games, including four last season with hip, oblique, foot and back injuries (he was benched while healthy for two other games). Perhaps an even greater issue is Richardson's accuracy. Last year, it was off the chart -- the bottom of the chart. At 54.9 percent, his on-target rate was last in the league by more than 12 percentage points, and his 47.7 completion percentage was the worst since Tim Tebow's 46.5 in 2011. It doesn't help that Richardson is in love with the deep ball. He threw 20.1 percent of his attempts at least 20 yards downfield -- far and away tops in the league -- and had a league-high 12.2-yard average target depth. Yet, he converted that to a mere 6.8 YPA (25th). His massive rushing production -- 499 yards and six scores in 11 games -- was the one saving grace for his fantasy value, but he nonetheless failed to reach 14 fantasy points in seven games (four with single digits). This year, Richardson lost a summer job battle to free-agent signing Daniel Jones, who was named the Week 1 starter in mid-August. There's still hope Richardson's accuracy improves with better footwork and touch, as he turned 23 in May and has just 348 NFL pass attempts to his name. However, he'll start the season on the bench, and it doesn't seem like he has much of a future with Colts coach Shane Steichen even if the team ends up starting Richardson again at some point this season.

Four ideal landing spots?
NFL.com analysts identify the Rams, Jets and Packers among the top potential trade destinations for Richardson, who missed most of the 2025 season with a fractured orbital bone.
ANALYSIS
The Colts gave Richardson permission to seek a trade Thursday, and NFL.com analysts Marc Ross, Jeffri Chadiha, David Carr and Maurice Jones-Drew already have takes on where the embattled 2023 first-round pick could fit best. Ross and Jones-Drew are partial to the Rams -- with the latter also suggesting the 49ers as a secondary possibility -- highlighting Matthew Stafford's age and Sean McVay's highly QB-friendly offense. Meanwhile, Chadiha targets the Jets due to Richardson's cap-friendly salary for the next two seasons and the similarity of his skill set to that of Justin Fields and Tyrod Taylor, while Carr notes the Packers could potentially replicate the success they had in bringing along Malik Willis with Richardson.
