The No. 6 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, Johnson was a go-to scorer at Texas in his lone collegiate campaign. He started all 33 games and averaged 19.9 points on 43/40/87 shooting splits, winning SEC Freshman of the Year and earning Second-Team All-SEC honors. Johnson and fellow rookie Will Riley find themselves in the midst of Washington's rebuild, which should mean tons of playing time and usage right away. However, that might not be the case, given Washington's questionable assortment of talent. At the top, you have aging veterans on expiring contracts in CJ McCollum and Khris Middleton, who'll be trade candidates. Next, you have the 2024 draft class - Alex Sarr, Bub Carrington and Kyshawn George - who all performed well as rookies and deserve chances to continue their development in expanded roles. Then, there is the 2023 lottery pick, Bilal Coulibaly, who's proven to be an elite NBA defender. Finally, you have high-upside youngsters, Cam Whitmore and AJ Johnson, who were acquired via trade over the last two seasons. Not to mention, a rag-tag group of semi-veterans in Corey Kispert, Justin Champagnie, Malaki Branham and Anthony Gill, who've had NBA roles previously but won't demand developmental minutes. Long story short, Johnson's fantasy value doesn't solely ride on how well he's producing. It'll be determined by what happens with the depth chart ahead of him. Johnson will likely be a better points league option, at least early in his career, and is worth a flier after pick 150 in standard leagues. Read Past Outlooks

Personal Bio/PreCareer Summary
Johnson led Lake Highlands High School to a state championship in 2023 and was named Texas Mr. Basketball before transferring to Link Academy in Missouri for his senior season. He started 33 games as a freshman at Texas, averaging 19.9 points, 3.1 rebounds, 2.7 assists and 0.8 steals in 34.7 minutes per game while posting 43/40/87 shooting splits on 15.9 field-goal attempts, 6.8 three-point tries and 4.2 free-throw trips per game. Johnson was named SEC Freshman of the Year, earned Second-Team All-SEC honors and broke a freshman school record by dropping 39 points on Arkansas, topping Kevin Durant's previous high of 37. Johnson is a pure three-level scorer. At 6-foot-6, Johnson has the size to get his shot up over smaller defenders whenever he wants, the quickness to blow by anyone sitting on his jumper and the athleticism to finish over help with authority. He loves to face-up, jab and pump fake like Carmelo Anthony when given a 1-on-1, but Johnson really excels off screens and in transition. He's naturally an off-guard and doesn't show point-guard tendencies. However, Johnson can certainly make plays and find open guys when the defense collapses on him. Defensively, Johnson needs to build muscle and be more engaged. Jordan Clarkson (6'5), Cam Thomas (6'3) and CJ McCollum (6'3) are good examples of bigger, score-first guards who developed into solid playmakers at the NBA level. Johnson also shares a lot of similarities with Terrence Shannon (6'6), but Johnson spent only one year in college, while Shannon was a 24-year-old rookie in 2024-25. Johnson has a similar frame to Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (6'6, 200), but SGA was more of a true point guard coming out of Kentucky. Clarkson is the most likely comparison for Johnson, but the Texas product has immense upside if he lands in the right spot.

Since moving into the starting five, the sixth overall pick in the 2025 Draft is averaging 14.7 points, 2.9 assists, 2.5 boards, 2.5 threes and 1.4 steals in 26.9 minutes while shooting 43.5 percent from beyond the arc.

ANALYSIS Johnson, who was selected sixth overall in the 2025 NBA Draft, will miss multiple weeks, but head coach Brian Keefe didn't reveal a specific timetable beyond saying that Johnson will be re-evaluated in two weeks. Johnson already dealt with this injury during his lone collegiate season at Texas in 2024-25. The 19-year-old is averaging 11.5 points and 3.0 boards per game as a rookie for a struggling Wizards team this season while shooting 44.5 percent from the floor in his first 15 contests.
