2026 Fantasy Outlook
Fitts prepared to compete for a spot on the back end of Boston's rotation or its bullpen, but the Red Sox traded him to St. Louis to land Sonny Gray. That deal likely means Fitts will be part of the Cardinals rotation. The right-hander fought through a couple of injuries and made 11 appearances (10 starts) 2025, posting a 5.00 ERA with estimators suggesting luck was on his side (5.80 FIP, 5.55 xERA). Any encouraging contact rates from his four starts in 2024 went the other way in 2025, when he was hammered for 11 home runs in 45 innings. An arm injury eventually cut short his season in August, but Fitts was throwing in November and is expected to have a normal offseason. He's a fastball/slider starter and may need to develop another pitch or locate better. In St. Louis, beyond Matthew Liberatore and Michael McGreevy, the Cardinals are looking to fill out the starting staff. His velocity remained up just as it was in his first Grapefruit League outing, averaging 96.6 mph with his four-seamer and 96.2 mph with his sinker. The big righty has spun five scoreless innings between the two appearances while collecting a 5:0 K:BB. Fitts is competing for a spot in the Cardinals' rotation, and that the team is mulling a six-man setup, at least initially, helps his odds.

Once the dust settles this offseason, Fitts may not project to crack Boston's Opening Day rotation, but he appears ready to step up when a need arises. The 24-year-old righty struggled to miss bats in his four-start run in the majors (6.4 SwStr%, nine Ks in 20.2 IP), but he also limited hard contact (1.4 Barrel%) en route to a 1.74 ERA and 1.26 WHIP. The ERA estimators were split on his work (xERA, FIP in favor, xFIP, SIERRA against), but his pitches popped on the Stuff+ model, particularly his mid-80s slider (121 Stuff+), while Location+ (104) and Pitching+ (106) were also bullish on Fitts. He logged a 4.17 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and a 15.0 K-BB% in 116.2 innings over 24 appearances at Triple-A. Fitts has logged over 135 innings in back-to-back seasons and could make double-digit starts in the majors this year with a slight chance at a breakout.
