2026 Fantasy Outlook
Long has Cabrera tantalized with his impressive stuff. Prior to 2025, he hadn't shown a hint of command or control, but the right-hander impressively shaved his walk rate down from 12.0% to 8.3% last season, while also significantly reducing his home-run rate. His strikeout rate held steady above 25%. There is a real chance those gains go out the window quickly, but Cabrera's improved performance over a career-high 137.2 innings provides reason for optimism. His name has been mentioned often in trade rumors this winter, but the Marlins could very well hold onto him given he has several more years of team control remaining. Both a performance and injury risk, Cabrera will look to continue proving himself in the starting rotation in 2026. Read Past Outlooks
Avoids arbitration with Cubs
Cabrera agreed to a one-year, $4.45 million contract with the Cubs on Thursday to avoid arbitration, Jesse Rogers of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis
Cabrera put together a strong 2025 campaign with Miami, finishing with an 8-7 record (26 starts) while posting a 3.53 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 150:48 K:BB across 137.2 innings. He was traded by the Marlins to the Cubs on Wednesday, and if healthy, he provides the Cubs with upside and strikeout potential out of the rotation.

Cabrera made two trips to the injured list last season due to a right shoulder impingement and continued to be plagued by inconsistent command and control when on the field. He turned in a 3.57 ERA overall in the second half even as his walk issues got the better of him multiple times. The right-hander leans heavily on his fastball-changeup combo while mixing in a breaking ball, and the stuff has been good enough for him to post a 26 percent strikeout rate for his career. However, occasional homer issues exacerbate the walks when he struggles to hit his spots, and injuries have held him back. Whether the command ever materializes remains the big question, and until that missing piece comes along, he will remain susceptible to blowups. The Marlins are likely holding out hope and figure to give Cabrera at least one more chance to prove himself in a starting role.
