McLaughlin had a disastrous 2025 season, but he kicked off 2026 in strong form. He started on pole before ultimately being overmatched by a dominant Alex Palou for the win, primarily due to a disappointing first stint on the primary compound tire. However, he clawed back second place with an overtake of Kyle Kirkwood on Lap 94 to log his highest finish in his last 22 races. McLaughlin has finished inside the top five in three of his five starts at St. Petersburg, so next weekend's race at Phoenix could provide more insight into whether he and Team Penske have truly improved form relative to 2025.
