Past Fantasy Outlooks
Between time in the minors and injury, MacEwen logged just 30 contests with Ottawa last season -- his fewest NHL games since 2019-20. When he was in the lineup, he recorded two goals, three points, 57 PIM and 55 hits. MacEwen is projected to open the 2024-25 campaign on the Senators' fourth line and will likely move between that role and time as a healthy scratch over the course of the season. When he plays, the 28-year-old is a great source of PIM and hits, but you can't count on him to consistently be in the lineup.
Splitting last season between Philadelphia and Los Angeles, MacEwen appeared in 56 games, missing more than a month starting in late January with a broken jaw. His offensive production was extremely limited (four goals, 10 points), although MacEwen did post 150 hits for a second straight year. The Kings declined to make him a qualifying offer, allowing MacEwen to enter unrestricted free agency before inking a three-year, $2.325 million deal with Ottawa. It seems like an awful lot of term for a replaceable bottom-six grinder, but the monetary commitment is minimal.
MacEwen appeared in 17 games with the Canucks in 2019-20, producing six points and 41 hits. The undrafted 24-year-old also had 11 points in 20 games with AHL Utica. He's known for playing a physical game with his 6-foot-3, 205-pound frame, but it remains to be seen what he can do in terms of contributions on the scoresheet. A natural center, MacEwen will likely have to settle for whatever he can get in Vancouver's bottom six in 2020-21. Hell likely battle Tyler Motte, Jay Beagle and Loui Eriksson for consistent playing time. Fantasy managers won't have a need to select MacEwen on draft day, but if he plays his way up the lineup, he could have appeal in deeper formats due to his physicality.
MacEwen collected an assist in four games with Vancouver a season ago but spent most of 2018-19 with AHL Utica. In the minors, the 23-year-old scored 22 goals and 59 points but was minus-21 in 69 games. MacEwen continues to struggle in his own end, and because of his defensive limitations, he'll have a hard time cracking the Canucks' roster this upcoming season.
