Stuart Skinner

Stuart Skinner

27-Year-Old GoalieG
Pittsburgh Penguins
2025 Fantasy Outlook
Skinner had his worst season as a No. 1 goalie in 2024-25, posting a 26-18-4 record with a 2.81 GAA and a .896 save percentage over 51 regular-season outings. He had some injuries late in the campaign, and while he opened the postseason as the Oilers' top goalie, he yielded those duties to Calvin Pickard after two games, temporarily took it back, then was replaced again during the Stanley Cup Finals. Skinner's $2.6 million cap hit is manageable -- it's not enough to guarantee him a hearty share of playing time if his performance doesn't match. Both Skinner and Pickard are under contract for 2025-26, but with the cap rising, the Oilers may consider an upgrade in goal before next season. Skinner's been fine most of the time, but his playoff struggles cast some doubt on his long-term outlook with the team. Read Past Outlooks

Yields three goals in loss
GPittsburgh Penguins
April 18, 2026
Skinner stopped 17 of 20 shots in Saturday's 3-2 loss to the Flyers in Game 1.
ANALYSIS
Skinner was strong early on, but the Flyers scored a pair of goals in the third period. The 27-year-old Skinner went 4-5-4 with a 3.24 GAA and an .884 save percentage over 14 outings after the Olympic break. That's not a great run of form for the goalie, but he has the edge over Arturs Silovs for playing time. Skinner's experience could be the difference. Over three previous playoff runs, he has a combined 26-22 record with a 2.88 GAA, an .893 save percentage and four shutouts in 50 appearances. That includes taking the Oilers to the Stanley Cup Finals in each of the past two postseasons.

Past Fantasy Outlooks

2023
2022
Skinner's 2023-24 swung harder than a pendulum. He started the season with a painful 3-9-1 record and a .891 save percentage. Then in late November, he started a run where he looked like a Vezina candidate. Finally, Skinner got benched in the second round of the playoffs. It was what he needed to reset his game and almost win a Cup. Fantasy-wise, the hometown goalie finished tied for third overall in wins (36) alongside Sergei Bobrovsky and Igor Shesterkin. Despite that bad start, Skinner finished with a 2.62 GAA and a .905 save percentage overall. Along the way, he supplanted the great Grant Fuhr for the franchise record for consecutive wins (12). Skinner has the potential to be a top-tier netminder if he can put together a complete season. He'll get that shot in 2024-25 with a heavy workload and top-eight finishes in every fantasy category.
Skinner went from a relative unknown to the Oilers' starting goalie in 2022-23, posting a 29-14-5 record with a 2.75 GAA and a .913 save percentage in 50 contests. That's just about in line with his 13-game sample from 2021-22, and it's enough to project him as the Oilers' top goalie in 2023-24 after he was a finalist for the Calder Trophy. Skinner doesn't have to be great to rack up wins with the Oilers' offense on his side, but he's got a good sample of NHL action on his resume. He's likely a top-15 goalie in fantasy this year, and if he continues to improve with experience, he could push his way into the top 10.
There's a real case to be made that Skinner was Edmonton's best goaltender a season ago, but the team still refused to give him an extended run as the No. 1 option, instead preferring to rely on veterans Mike Smith and Mikko Koskinen. Skinner played in 13 games for the Oilers in 2021-22, posting a mediocre 6-6-0 record and a solid 2.62 GAA and .913 save percentage. Koskinen is gone and Smith is injured and unlikely to ever play again, but Edmonton signed Jack Campbell to a lucrative deal in free agency in July to serve as the team's starter. Skinner is penciled in as the backup, leaving him with little to no fantasy appeal.

Poised to play Monday
GPittsburgh Penguins
March 30, 2026
Skinner was working in the starter's crease ahead of Monday's road game versus the Islanders, Stephen Whyno of the Associated Press reports, indicating he'll tend the twine.
ANALYSIS
Skinner has given up three or more goals in each of his last seven outings, posting a 2-2-3 record, 3.74 GAA and .872 save percentage in that span. Despite the poor numbers, the 27-year-old netminder will be playing in his third straight game for the first time since early December when he was still with the Oilers. With the Penguins heading into a back-to-back, fantasy managers can expect Arturs Silovs in goal at home versus the Red Wings on Tuesday.
