In his first full season with the Red Wings, Edvinsson took on a first-pairing role and didn't look out of place. The 2021 No. 6 overall pick posted seven goals (three game-winners), 24 helpers, 67 PIM, 86 shots on goal, 86 hits, 144 blocked shots and a plus-12 rating over 78 games in 2024-25. He’s relatively mobile for a 6-foot-6 defenseman, and at 22 years old, the hulking blueliner will continue to gain playing time at even strength. The Swede was tied for the team lead in primary assists (14) on defense last season with Moritz Seider, so Edvinsson could carve out a role with the No. 2 power-play unit in 2025-26 if he continues to grow offensively. The rearguard should be capable of improving across the board, as he will be a restricted free agent after the 2025-26 campaign. ANALYSIS
Both points came in the first period as Detroit jumped out to a 3-1 lead, but it slipped away late. It was Edvinsson's first multi-point performance since Dec. 20, and while the 23-year-old blueliner isn't yet supplying consistent offense for the Wings, he's hardly been a disappointment. Over 52 games this season, Edvinsson's delivered eight goals, 20 points, 113 blocked shots, 68 hits, 67 PIM, 63 shots on net and a plus-8 rating.

Last season, Edvinsson saw action in 16 games for the Wings in which he notched one goal, one assist and 26 hits while averaging 18:15 of ice time. In total, the Swedish blueliner has played in 25 contests at the NHL level but could be in line for an expanded role heading into the upcoming campaign. In the minors, the 2021 sixth-overall pick garnered 30 points in 54 outings during the previous year, so he could offer some offensive upside. Still, Edvinsson won't be a Norris Trophy nominee during his career and figures to offer mid-range fantasy value at best.
One of the consensus top prospects in the league, Edvinsson spent the vast majority of his first season in North America with AHL Grand Rapids, finishing with five goals and 27 points in 2022-23. He also scored twice in a brief nine-game stint with the Wings. Still just 20 years of age, the former No. 6 overall selection (2021) has a real chance to skate alongside Moritz Seider on Detroit's top defensive pair at some point in the not too distant future. However, there's a real chance Edvinsson will start the upcoming season back in the minors instead of receiving minimal playing time at the NHL level. Fantasy managers should plan on seeing how Edvinsson's usage appears to be shaking out during training camp. If it looks like he'll be handed a substantial role at the NHL level, Edvinsson will have appeal in redraft formats this year.

The 23-year-old will likely slot into a top-four role Feb. 26 versus the Senators, assuming he is activated from injured reserve prior to that contest.
