Michael McCarron

31-Year-Old CenterC
Minnesota Wild
2025 Fantasy Outlook
After scoring double-digit goals for the first time in his career in 2023-24, last season represented a step back for McCarron. He recorded just five goals and 14 points with Nashville despite playing a career-high 74 games. The lack of production already gives him minimal fantasy value, but the offseason trade acquisition of Erik Haula now throws into question just how often the 30-year-old will be in the lineup. He does get into a lot of trouble, ranking eighth in PIM with 102 in 2024-25, so he can offer value there. However, his appeal diminishes somewhat in leagues that use hits -- he had 149 last year -- instead of PIM. If he does play regularly, he could repeat his 2024-25 totals, but some regression in games played, and therefore other categories, is a real possibility. Read Past Outlooks

McCarron scored a goal, dished an assist, added two PIM and doled out three hits in Friday's 4-2 win over the Golden Knights.
ANALYSIS
McCarron's first game with the Wild couldn't have gone much better. The 30-year-old was acquired from the Predators on Tuesday and slotted onto the fourth line in his Wild debut. That's likely where he'll stay moving forward, though he should still be a steady source of hits. He has earned six goals, 14 points, 87 shots on net, 168 hits, 60 blocked shots and 75 PIM over 60 appearances this season, matching his point total from 74 outings a year ago.

McCarron topped the 20-point mark for the first time in his career in 2023-24, earning 12 goals, 10 assists, 142 hits and 100 PIM over 70 regular-season contests in a fourth-line role. The forward, now 29 years old, is a bit of a late bloomer, but expecting much more than 20 points a year from him won't go well for fantasy managers. He shot 12.8 percent last season, just the second time he's been over 10 percent in a campaign, so there's likely some regression on the way. McCarron probably won't have to battle for a spot in the lineup, but his productivity will limit his fantasy value to formats that reward his rough play.
McCarron received a one-year contract extension shortly after the 2022-23 season, so he'll again be around as organizational forward depth for the Predators. The 28-year-old managed four points and 75 hits in 32 NHL contests last season while primarily playing in a fourth-line role when the Predators' forward depth was tested. McCarron has never managed more than 14 points in a season, and his role is not likely to change much even if he makes the Opening Night roster, so he's not an option for fantasy managers.
McCarron's entering his fourth professional season, but doesn't look anywhere near being NHL-ready. His prospect status has slowly receded since a nice rookie season when the 6-foot-6, 231-pound center showed the proper mix of physicality and playmaking. When he's at his best, McCarron is using his body along the boards to win puck battles, doling out meaningful checks and making life difficult for defensemen and goalies in the argy-bargy near the net. Since his outlier rookie season, the native of Grosse Point, Michigan has slipped into a more senseless style of physicality where his offense has declined and his penalty minutes have climbed. Furthermore, the organization opted to modify his playing style, from an offensively capable forward to one that primarily concentrates on the defensive side of things. He seems lost at this point and the Canadiens appear to be losing patience in him. He'll likely start the season at AHL Laval, provided he clears waivers.
McCarron had a rough start to his first season of pro hockey and was left off the U.S. World Junior team. The 6-foot-5 power forward improved over the second half, finishing with 34 points in 66 games for London of the Ontario Hockey League. The Canadiens are saying all the right things about their 2013 first-round draft pick, noting it was possible McCarron could take a step back in his first exposure to the pro-style schedule. It turns out McCarron was in need of better conditioning and nutrition. He's shed some body fat and added muscle this summer and is looking to change the first impressions he left.
McCarron, 18, was Montreal's first-round pick in the 2013 draft. He's expected to become the Canadiens' next big power forward. He's a good character guy who plays heavy and has potential to develop offensively. He enjoys the high-traffic areas and has good hands near the net. He passed up a college offer (Western Michigan) to sign a three-year deal with the Canadiens and is expected to spend most of his time with London of the OHL.

Poised for trade?

McCarron is being held out of the lineup Tuesday versus the Blue Jackets, and Renaud Lavoie of TVA Sports reports the forward has played his last game for Nashville.
ANALYSIS
McCarron looks set for a change of scenery soon, now that he's being held out for trade protection. The center can help a contender's penalty kill while adding some grit, but he isn't likely to see a boost in offense with a new team.
