Jake Sanderson

23-Year-Old DefensemanD
Ottawa Senators
2025 Fantasy Outlook
Sanderson took a major step into becoming one of the NHL's premier defensemen, with a career-high 11 goals and 46 assists in 80 regular-season games. He was a dominant force on the power play, where he notched over half of his production (five goals, 25 assists), and he was extremely clutch, scoring four of his 11 goals as game-winners. That being said, in order to become a true superstar, Sanderson needs to take a step forward at five-on-five, where his play dropped off with the role of the Senators' No.1 defenseman. Regardless, with the production that the fifth overall pick in 2020 can put up on the power play and with so much room to grow at just 22 years old, the ceiling seems almost limitless for him as the Senators look to build on last year's playoff run. Monster effort in loss
DOttawa Senators
January 18, 2026
Sanderson scored a goal, distributed three assists and placed three shots on net in Saturday's 6-5 overtime loss to Montreal.
ANALYSIS
Sanderson recorded three helpers, including two on the power play, in the second period before lighting the lamp himself in the third to give the Senators a 5-3 lead. His four-point performance brought his season totals up to 10 goals, 29 assists, 101 shots on net and 93 blocks through 47 games this season. The 2025-26 campaign is set to be another steady season of improvement for the 23-year-old blueliner, who is currently on pace to reach 60 regular-season points for the first time in his four-year career. Sanderson ranks in the top 10 in points among defensemen as well as 20th in blocks. His phenomenal two-way effort gives him elite value on the fantasy blue line.

2022
Sanderson had a better offensive performance in his sophomore season in 2023-24, netting 10 goals and earning 38 points in 79 games. He also improved defensively and formed a solid shutdown pairing with Artem Zub. The 22-year-old Sanderson has tremendous upside as a two-way defender. He already claimed a spot on the top power-play unit last campaign, and his responsibilities could increase further in 2024-25 after the Senators traded Jakob Chychrun to Washington during the offseason. Sanderson should surpass the 40-point mark while topping 150 shots on goal and 150 blocked shots.
There were concerns regarding how the 20-year-old Sanderson would handle the jump from college hockey to the NHL. He not only held his own, but thrived. Sanderson posted four goals and 32 points in 77 games in his freshman campaign, being named to the NHL All-Rookie Team in the process. He quarterbacked Ottawa's No. 1 power-play unit when Thomas Chabot was out injured and closed the year with 17 points with the man advantage. The lone concern for Sanderson's 2023-24 fantasy outlook is not only is Chabot back, but Jakob Chychrun has entered the picture as well. Any dip in power-play time could potentially damage his scoring numbers significantly, though Sanderson's youth allows for him to offset that dip with even-strength growth.
Sanderson, the fifth overall pick in the 2020 draft, signed his entry-level deal with Ottawa in late March following the completion of his season at the University of North Dakota. A hand injury prohibited Sanderson from making his NHL debut late in the year, but he has since recovered and is fully expected to be a regular for the Senators in 2022-23. Ottawa will likely practice caution with Sanderson, who will play the entirety of the upcoming year at age 20, but he could very easily force the Sens' hand into a larger role if he gets off to a quick start.

Exits practice early
DOttawa Senators
November 5, 2025
Sanderson left Wednesday's practice session early with an apparent injury, Bruce Garrioch of Postmedia reports.
ANALYSIS
It's possible that Sanderson will still return to practice, but it's something worth monitoring for fantasy managers. In 13 outings this season, the 23-year-old blueliner has notched three goals and eight helpers, including six power-play points. If Sanderson were to miss any time, Thomas Chabot could see an uptick in minutes, including moving to the No. 1 power-play unit.
