Lilleberg made significant progress on offense in his second NHL campaign, earning 19 points over 76 regular-season appearances with Tampa Bay. However, it's more about the physical play for the Norwegian defenseman, as he added 114 hits, 105 PIM and 61 blocked shots. Lilleberg wasn't fully trusted to take on bigger minutes, averaging just 15:17 per game, but at 24 years old, he still has time to grow into more minutes. It's unlikely he'll ever be a big scorer from the blue line, but he looks like a player who should have no trouble holding onto a spot in the lineup. Lilleberg (undisclosed) was labeled as week-to-week by head coach Jon Cooper, who told reporters Monday he was hoping to have the defenseman back before the Olympic break, Eduardo A. Encina of the Tampa Bay Times reports.
ANALYSIS
Considering the Olympic break isn't until February, it certainly doesn't sound like Lilleberg is going to be back anytime soon. With just three points in his last 15 outings, the blueliner doesn't offer much in the way of offensive productivity, though he did chip in 33 hits and 19 blocks over that stretch. Lilleberg's extended absence will open up a spot on the blue line for Steve Santini until Ryan McDonagh (undisclosed) is ready to come off of injured reserve.
