In his first NHL campaign, Heineman was fine as a bottom-six contributor for the Canadiens. He had 18 points, 64 shots on net, 173 hits and a minus-6 rating over 62 regular-season appearances. Heineman has some promise as a second-round pick of the Panthers from 2020, but it will be tough to capitalize on that potential if he remains in a bottom-six role for the next few years. Ideally, he'd bump up to be a power forward capable of pushing for 30-plus points in a middle-six spot instead. However, he figures to remain in a bottom-six role to start 2025-26 after being flipped to the Islanders over the summer in the return for Noah Dobson. On the plus side, he might get some power-play ice time -- Heineman earned five of his 18 points with the man advantage, which is an area the Isles need to improve. Read Past Outlooks

Heineman's steady play from earlier in the season has dropped off, as he's gotten on the scoresheet in just four of the last 13 games. The 24-year-old winger is still seeing top-six minutes at even strength while playing in all situations. He's at 14 goals, 21 points, 100 shots on net, 152 hits, 31 blocked shots and an even plus-minus rating over 46 appearances. Heineman's physical play gives him a higher floor than other players at similar levels of offense.

ANALYSIS
Heineman has a goal and four points in seven contests with AHL Laval this season. The 22-year-old was originally selected by Florida in the 2020 NHL Draft, but he was traded from the Panthers to the Flames in 2021 as part of the Sam Bennett deal and then from Calgary to Montreal in 2022 in the Tyler Toffoli trade. Heineman will likely serve in a bottom-six capacity in his debut.
