List is the rare late-bloomer on the PGA Tour. He was in his early 30s before getting full time status on the PGA Tour, and after a ho-hum rookie season, he really picked up his game. He leveled off somewhat until the 2021-2022 season where he picked up his first win. List got off to a really slow start this past season and lost about two months to a thumb injury, but soon after his return, he picked up the second win of his career. List is approaching 40, but he appears to be at or near his peak right now, so he should have a few strong years ahead of him. At just under $3 million, he makes for an interesting salary cap target this season.
List is what you'd call a "late-bloomer". He didn't make it to the PGA Tour full time until he was 30 and even after that it took him a couple seasons to find his footing. Since then he's produced at a decent level, sometimes nearing the top-50, but at this point, it's safe to say that his ceiling is limited. He's posted his highest earnings number of his career this past season, which means he's a hard pass when it comes to salary cap teams. He should remain productive for at least a few more years because of how well he strikes the ball, but his putter throughout his career has been historically bad.
List had a nice resurgence during the 2020-21 season, notching five top-10s to match his career-high from the 2017-18 season. He's always been one of the longest drivers on tour, and he ranked among the top 30 in strokes-gained tee-to-green this season. List's putting has always been his main detriment, but if he can find a week where he warms up with the flatstick, it wouldn't be a surprise to see him finally pick up his maiden PGA Tour victory this season.
List went 12-for-22 last season with a best finish of T10 at the Memorial Tournament. It was enough to sneak into the playoffs, but a MC in Boston ended his season quickly. List has the power to attack most courses, but his putting really let him down this past season. He ranked 22nd in SG: Tee-to-green, but 182nd in SG: Putting for the year. That ball striking makes his upside a little higher. List had surpassed $1.3 million each of the prior three seasons, so I'd expect a total earnings number at the end of the 2020-21 campaign to be closer to that than it was this past season.
List's rookie season on the PGA Tour was 2013, but he didn't really make his presence known until 2017, when he picked-up a runner-up finish and over $1.8 million in earnings. Not much was known about List at the time and it was a reasonable assumption that he was a young guy just getting started, but that wasn't the cases. List was already in his 30s when he had his break through and he starts this season at the age of 34. There's no reason to think he'll regress anytime soon, but we've probably seen the best we are going to see out of him already.
List is definitely on the way up, but after showing large increases in his earnings over the past three seasons, has he peaked? That's the question entering this season as List posted an impressive earnings total of over $2.7 million last season. List does everything well on his way to the green, but then he pulls out the putter and all bets are off. List ranked 182nd on the PGA Tour in strokes-gained putting last season and he was 176th the season prior. There's definitely an issue there, but if he can improve, even slightly, he could be pushing the $4 million mark this season. List will enter this season as a high risk, high reward guy, but he might just be worth the risk.
List showed a major improvement from the 2015-16 season to last season, more than doubling his earnings, but most of List's earnings came during the fall portion of the season, which is a little worrisome. List wasn't terribly during the heart of the season last year, but his only top-10 came at the Shell Houston Open. This was the second consecutive season where List failed to get much done after the fall portion of the season, so he'll have to prove he can produce throughout the year before he becomes a good salary cap option.
List's first go-round on the PGA Tour in 2013 was a disaster. List could only manage $264k in 24 starts and failed to crack the top-10. 2015-16 was a different story though as he posted two top-10s before the end of February and capped his season with a pair of top-20s. In all, it was just enough to secure his card for the upcoming season, which in of itself makes him an intriguing salary cap selection. With that said, though he appears to be trending upward, it's a slow road to this point and he's probably not worth the price in salary cap leagues this year. List will likely go late in a draft because he does have potential.
List is a classic example of how long the road can be to get to the PGA TOUR. After showing tons of promise when he finished runner-up to Ryan Moore at the 2004 U.S. Amateur, List chose to stay in school, graduating from Vanderbilt in 2007. He got his first Web.com Tour victory last year at the South Georgia Classic, to go along with three second-place finishes. It all added up to a fourth-place finish on the money list and his PGA TOUR card for 2013. The key for List will be keeping his drives in the fairway. He led the Web.com Tour in driving distance at 324 yards in 2012 but finished 125th in driving accuracy at just about 57 percent. On tougher PGA TOUR circuits, that could be a problem.
