Totals

A totals bet is a wager on whether a game will finish with a combined number of points that is either above or below a figure preset by a sportsbook. This type of bet, also commonly known as an over/under wager, is a common pivot for bettors who may not have a particularly strong feeling on the outright winner of a game or a point spread, but who feel confident in predicting the total points.

An example of a totals bet is as follows: A Pistons-Bulls divisional clash is listed with a projected total of 211.5 points. A bettor who stakes their claim on the over needs the game to finish with a combined total of at least 212 points for the wager to be deemed a winner. On other hand, a bettor placing a wager on the under will be pulling for a combined score of 211 points or fewer in order to be able to cash a winning ticket.

Moneyline

A moneyline bet is a wager on which team will win a game outright. This is one of the most straightforward bets to make and is usually popular with novice bettors. As long as the team a bettor places a wager on wins the game, it's a winning bet. The one downside to moneyline bets when teams are heavily favored is that the "juice" – the odds attached to each team – can be very heavy for the favored team.

An example of a moneyline wager would be as follows: The Tigers are an underdog to the White Sox in an AL Central matchup. Detroit has +160 moneyline odds as the underdog, while Chicago carries -195 moneyline odds as the favorite. That means that bettors who pick the Tigers to win outright will win $160 on a $100 bet if Detroit does prevail, while those betting the Sox will have to bet $195 to win a $100 in the event of a Chicago victory.

Prop Bets

A prop bet is a wager based on whether a player or a team will exceed or fall short of a specific statistical benchmark that has been preset by the sportsbook. Prop bets are essentially like totals bets, except they're not necessarily based on total number of points scored. Futures

A futures bet is a wager on whether a specific player or team will achieve a specific statistical benchmark, or whether a specific player or team will achieve a certain individual or team accomplishment, usually over the course of a regular season and/or postseason.

An example of a futures bet based on a player completing a specific accomplishment would be a wager on whether the Lions' D'Andre Swift will exceed 1,000 rushing yards in a given season. An example of a team-based futures bet would be a wager on whether the Wolverines football team can win the Big Ten title in the upcoming season.

Parlays

A parlay combines multiple wagers into one betslip. These can be bets involving two or more sporting events, or multiple bets involving the same game. Parlays are appealing because they will carry more favorable odds than each bet within them individually would, due to the fact that all wagers within the parlay must be winners for the bet to cash.

An example of a parlay is as follows: A bettor wagers that a late-season Tigers-Red Sox game goes over the projected total of 7.5 runs, that the Lions beat a 4.5-point spread as an underdog against the Vikings and that the game between Detroit and Minnesota finishes under 48.5 points. If all three bets turn out to be accurate, then the parlay is a winner. If only one of those scenarios doesn't come to pass, however, then the parlay will not cash.  

Teasers

A teaser has some similarity to a parlay wager in that it also involves multiple bets. However, the main difference is that a bettor is allowed to "shift" the point spread or the total in either direction to a certain degree. Typically, sportsbooks offer teasers in increments of 6-7 points Otherwise, just as with a parlay, every bet in the teaser must be a winner in order for the wager to pay out. A teaser's odds aren't as attractive as a parlay's odds because you're essentially buying points.

An example of a teaser is as follows. A bettor moves the Lions from 4.5-point to 10.5-point underdogs against the Vikings while also boosting the Packers from 7.5 to 10.5-point favorites over the Bears. If Detroit then loses by 10 points or fewer or wins outright and Green Bay wins its game by at least 11 points, the teaser will be considered a winner. Michigan became the 20th state to legalize sports betting when Governor Gretchen Whitmer signed HB 4916 — the Lawful Sports Betting Act — into law on December 20, 2019. The legislation came in the wake of the Supreme Court's 2018 ruling in Murphy v. National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), which struck down the federal Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act (PASPA) and opened the door for states to regulate sports wagering independently.

The Lawful Sports Betting Act was companion legislation to HB 4308, which legalized online casino gaming and poker in the state. Together, the two bills created a comprehensive framework for digital gaming in Michigan, establishing licensing requirements, tax rates, and oversight responsibilities. The acts authorize both commercial casinos and tribal gaming operators to offer sports betting under the regulation of the Michigan Gaming Control Board, with specific provisions for internet sports betting conducted through licensed platforms.

Key provisions of Michigan's sports betting law include: an 8.4% tax rate on adjusted gross sports betting receipts for online operators; an additional 1.25% city tax on commercial Detroit casinos' sports betting revenue; a $100,000 licensing fee (comprised of a $50,000 application fee and $50,000 annual operating fee); and a requirement that online sportsbooks partner with a licensed land-based casino to operate in the state. Retail sports betting at commercial Detroit casinos launched on March 11, 2020, and online/mobile betting went live statewide on January 22, 2021.

Michigan Sports Betting Licenses

Michigan's sports betting licensing structure is tied to its existing casino gaming framework. Both commercial and tribal casinos are eligible to apply for a sports betting license through the Michigan Gaming Control Board, and all license applications are evaluated against the same standards of financial stability, integrity, and operational readiness.

There are two primary license types relevant to sports betting in Michigan. 

• An Internet Sports Betting Operator License is required for commercial and tribal casino operators who wish to offer online sports wagering. These licensees must partner with the MGCB-approved internet sports betting platform provider (the technology behind the sportsbook). 
• A separate Platform Provider License applies to the technology companies that supply the software, risk management, and operational infrastructure to licensed operators. Platform providers must be independently licensed and approved by the MGCB before their software can be used by operators in the state.

All licenses carry an initial application fee of $50,000 and an annual operating fee of $50,000, for a total annual cost of $100,000. Licenses are subject to renewal and ongoing compliance reviews. As of early 2026, 12 commercial and tribal operators hold active Internet Sports Betting Operator licenses in Michigan.
