Is Sports Betting Legal in Illinois?
Yes. Sports betting has been legal in Illinois since Governor J.B. Pritzker signed SB 690 into law on June 28, 2019. The Illinois Sports Wagering Act authorized both retail and online sports betting at licensed casinos, racetracks, off-track betting parlors, and professional sports venues.
You must be 21 or older and physically located within Illinois to place a bet, and every licensed sportsbook uses geolocation technology to verify your location.
When Did Illinois Sports Betting Launch?
The first legal bet in Illinois was placed on March 9, 2020, at Rivers Casino in Des Plaines. Online sports betting followed a few months later when BetRivers went live on June 18, 2020, becoming the state's first licensed online sportsbook.
Originally, Illinois required bettors to register in person at a retail sportsbook before using an online app. Governor Pritzker temporarily waived this requirement through executive orders during the pandemic, and in March 2022, the in-person registration mandate was permanently eliminated.
