Matkovic entered last season with some sleeper buzz, but he was unable to capitalize. He struggled to secure a consistent role for much of the year and only began receiving meaningful minutes late in the campaign as injuries depleted the roster. Over his final 32 appearances, he averaged 9.8 points, 5.9 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 1.1 blocks in 22.3 minutes per game. While his per-minute production and defensive potential are encouraging, his path to playing time remains unclear given the team's current frontcourt depth, which includes Yves Missi, Zion Williamson, Herbert Jones and the addition of Kevon Looney. Personal Bio/PreCareer Summary

Born in March of 2001 in Livno, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Karlo Matkovic joined the Cedevita U16 squad (Adriatic Junior league) in 2017. In 2018, he played on Cedevita's U16 and U18 squads. That led to Matkovic's first professional contract in April of 2019 with Cedevita's senior league squad. As a 17-year-old, he played nine games with the senior squad and averaged over 10 minutes per contest. For the 2019-20 season, Matkovic was loaned to OKK Belgrade for the Serbian League season. With OKK Belgrade, Matkovic started 24 of 25 games, but only saw 13-plus minutes of run per contest. Heading into the 2022 NBA Draft, Matkovic was a 6-foot-11 combination power forward/center who showed promise as a 20-year-old in the 2021-22 season for Mega Mozzart of the Serbian ABA Adriatic league. In 25 games (8 starts) for Mega Mozzart, the Croatian produced 11.6 points, 6.1 boards and blocks per Adriatic contest during the 2021-22 season. In June of 2022, Matkovic was selected by the New Orleans Pelicans with the 52nd pick in the 2022 NBA Draft.

Matkovic (calf) tallied eight points (4-5 FG), six rebounds, one assist and one block across 18 minutes off the bench in Thursday's 125-116 loss to the Timberwolves.
ANALYSIS
Matkovic made his return after missing New Orleans' previous eight games while recovering from a calf strain. He immediately reclaimed a spot in the Pelicans' frontcourt rotation and could have a chance at seeing his minutes pick up in future contests with Zion Williamson (adductor) out for at least three weeks and with Herbert Jones (calf) remaining without a clear target date for a return.
