Jose Alvarado

Jose Alvarado

27-Year-Old GuardG
New Orleans Pelicans
2024 Fantasy Outlook
Alvarado, much like the Pelicans themselves, enters the 2025-26 season as a true wild card. His role grew last year, making 23 starts in 56 regular-season games and averaging 10.3 points, 4.6 assists, 2.4 rebounds and 1.3 steals in 24.4 minutes per contest while shooting 39.2 percent from the field and 35.9 percent from deep. He cracked double figures in scoring for the first time in his career, but his efficiency slipped below 40 percent from the floor for the first time as well. What has remained steady for New Orleans is Alvarado's defensive tenacity -- the 27-year-old has posted at least a steal per game in every season since debuting in 2021-22. Predicting the scrappy guard's minutes is tricky, given the Pelicans' crowded perimeter, which now includes Jeremiah Fears and Jordan Poole, added via the 2025 NBA Draft and trade market, respectively. The improved health of Herbert Jones and the continued growth of Jordan Hawkins will also influence his role. However, Dejounte Murray won't return until later in the season as he recovers from a torn right Achilles tendon suffered in January 2025. Alvarado's defensive intensity will earn him playing time, but a meaningful jump in production or minutes is far from guaranteed. Read Past Outlooks

Personal Bio/PreCareer Summary

Jose Alvarado was born on April 12, 1998. Growing up, he played basketball for Christ the King Regional High School in Queens, New York City. As a junior in high school, Alvarado put up 17.0 points and 6.5 assists per game and was named the Catholic High School Athletic Association Player of the Year. He finished with 18 points, 10 rebounds, 10 assists and 10 steals in a game during his senior season, registering the first quadruple-double in school history. In September of 2016, Alvarado committed to play collegiate basketball for Georgia Tech, turning down offers from both Rutgers and Seton Hall. Alvarado started 25 games in his freshman year at Georgia Tech, averaging 12.1 points, 3.7 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game. As a sophomore, he put up 12.5 points and 3.9 rebounds per game, and 14.4 points, 4.0 assists, 3.4 rebounds and 2.2 steals as a junior. He was named to the Third-Team All-Atlantic Coast Conference at the conclusion of his junior season, and he was named the ACC Defensive Player of the Year following his senior year. Alvarado was not selected in the 2021 NBA Draft and later signed a two-way contract with the New Orleans Pelicans.

Scores 13 points with two steals
GNew Orleans Pelicans
December 4, 2025
Alvarado (elbow) returned to Thursday's game and finished with 13 points (5-8 FG, 3-5 3Pt), three rebounds, one assist, two steals and two turnovers across 22 minutes in a 125-116 loss to the Timberwolves.
ANALYSIS
Alvarado suffered a stinger to his left elbow late in the fourth quarter that caused him to retreat to the locker room, but he checked back into the game a short while later and was on the floor for the final two minutes of regulation, so it seems like he's fine. Alvarado has scored in double figures and hit multiple triples in three straight, and he'll look to make it four in a row Saturday in Brooklyn.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2023
2022
Alvarado put together a strong sophomore season in 2022-23, logging 21.5 minutes per night, averaging 9.0 points to go with 3.0 assists and 1.1 steals. He exploded for a career-high 38 points in a victory over the Nuggets in early December, a game that could very well end up being the best of his career. As an undersized guard, it is going to be hard for Alvarado to ever be more than a role player off the bench. He does provide the team with plenty of energy, something that is likely to at least keep him on the fringe of the rotation. However, the ascension of Dyson Daniels and the addition of Jordan Hawkins only complicate things for Alvarado. He may have some limited streaming value throughout the season, but as for long-term value, it does not appear likely at this point.
Alvarado surprised many last season, carving out a consistent role thanks to his tenacity on the defensive end of the court. In just 15.4 minutes per game during his rookie season, Alvarado averaged an impressive 1.3 steals, bumping that number to 1.8 over the final month. Add to that the fact he put up 4.4 assists per game over that same span, and it's fair to say that he will be a key piece for the Pelicans moving forward. Although he is likely to play fewer than 20 minutes per night, he is undoubtedly going to be a viable streaming option at points throughout the season.

December 4, 2025
Alvarado is a candidate to be moved ahead of the trade deadline, Chris Dodson of Clutch Points reports.
ANALYSIS
Trey Murphy, Zion Williamson and Herbert Jones have seen their names in the rumor mill, while Alvarado is one of the few role players on the roster that has generated any kind of interest. Alvarado is on the books for $4.5 million in 2025-26, and he holds a player option worth the same amount in 2026-27. With his bargain-bin contract, it's no surprise that he could generate interest from contending teams in need of backcourt depth.
