The No. 7 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, Fears was a dynamic player for Oklahoma in his lone collegiate campaign and was named to the SEC All-Freshman Team. He averaged 17.1 points, 4.1 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 1.6 steals in 30.2 minutes per game while posting 43/28/85 shooting splits. Fears did a little bit of everything in college, but doesn't have a natural position, which may not matter in today's NBA. With Dejounte Murray unlikely to play until the midway though 2025-26 while recovering from a torn Achilles, the Pelicans' starting point guard will be Jordan Poole, who was acquired in exchange for CJ McCollum this offseason. Trey Murphy, Herbert Jones, Zion Williamson and Yves Missi will round out the first five, with Jordan Hawkins and Jose Alvarado competing with Fears for backup backcourt minutes. That's not an ideal spot to be in for fantasy purposes. However, as a rookie lottery pick, Fears still has enough upside to be worth a flier at the end of standard drafts. At the very least, fantasy managers should keep close tabs on Fears throughout the season, given the Pelicans' recent injury history. Read Past Outlooks
$Signed a two-year, $15.42 million contract with the Pelicans in July of 2025. Contract includes $8.27 million team option for 2027-28.
Personal Bio/PreCareer Summary
Fears grew up in Illinois but transferred to Arizona Compass Prep as a junior, where he emerged as a four-star recruit and a top guard in the 2025 ESPN 100. He initially committed to Illinois over Kansas and Michigan but ultimately landed at Oklahoma, becoming the Sooners' biggest recruit since Trae Young. Fears started 31 of 34 games, averaging 17.1 points, 4.1 rebounds, 4.1 assists and 1.6 steals in 30.2 minutes while posting 43/28/85 shooting splits on 12.2 field-goal attempts, 3.9 three-point tries and 6.1 free-throw trips per game en route to SEC All-Freshman Team honors. Fears was a do-it-all wing in college, but he didn't have one elite, standout trait. He's not a natural point guard, but he can make plays for himself and others. Fears excels as a slasher and in transition because of his ability to draw fouls. His mid-range game and off-the-dribble jumper are solid, but he needs to show more consistency, especially as a spot-up shooter. Fears needs to put on muscle at the NBA level, but he has good instincts on both ends of the floor and carries a multifaceted skill set. When looking at Fears' stats and watching him play at Alabama, it's hard not to see a slender Josh Hart (6'4, 216). Jaden Ivey (6'4, 200) and Markelle Fultz (6'4, 209) are also fine comparisons who both went very early in their respective drafts but struggled to be a star at the NBA level. Fears doesn't have as high of a draft pedigree as Ivey or Fultz, but he could easily be a more impactful player if he harnesses a role similar to Hart.

Fears has scored in double figures in all but one game this season, and this was his fourth straight match with at least one steal.

ANALYSIS The No. 7 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft, Fears has a decent path to minutes as a combo guard in New Orleans. Dejounte Murray will be sidelined to open the campaign due to his torn Achilles, while Poole is penciled in as the starting point guard. If Fears can outplay Jose Alvarado and Jordan Hawkins in training camp, he could carve out a sizable role in the rotation. During the Summer League, Fears produced averages of 17.4 points, 3.8 rebounds, 2.6 assists, 1.4 steals and 0.8 three-pointers.
