McCain put together a strong rookie campaign before a knee injury brought his campaign to a premature end. He ended by playing just 23 games, during which he averaged 15.3 points to go with 2.6 assists and 2.2 three-pointers. Despite his impressive play, McCain now has to deal with VJ Edgecombe, as well as an emerging Quentin Grimes, not to mention Tyrese Maxey. Given that a lot of what McCain did last season came at a time when the team was dealing with injuries, it's hard to see him stepping into a larger role, at least in the short term. The 76ers are no strangers when it comes to injuries, so perhaps he will get an opportunity at some point during the season. Look for McCain to log minutes in the mid-20s when healthy. He underwent thumb surgery at the end of September and could miss the first month of the regular season. Read Past Outlooks

Personal Bio/PreCareer Summary
McCain is one-and-done after joining the Blue Devils as a five-star recruit, a 2023 McDonald's All-American and California Mr. Basketball. McCain also won gold while representing the United States at the FIBA Americas Under-18 Championship. A viral content creator with nearly three million followers on TikTok, McCain averaged 14.3 points on 46.2% shooting, 5.0 rebounds, 1.9 assists and 1.1 steals in 36 starts this season. McCain's pedigree carried over to two 30-point performances in the NCAA Tournament, as well as seven games with at least four made 3s this season - flashes of serious next-level scoring ability. Scoring is the appeal, as McCain is a two-way competitor but shouldn't be considered as a sure-fire asset on the defensive end in the NBA. Offensively, he ranked in the 81st percentile for off-the-dribble shooting efficiency, while also knocking down 42.1% of 160 catch-and-shoot 3s on the year. McCain can put the ball on the deck as well, converting 62.5% of his shots at the rim while ranking in the 37th percentile for frequency among guards nationwide. Being an attentive defender and possessing a sturdy frame work in his favor as well, but McCain's size nonetheless shifts pressure to his offense translating. McCain almost never turned the ball over (453rd-lowest TO rate in the nation), finishing with a modest but commendable 68/47 assist-to-turnover ratio. His decision-making as a freshman shows combo-guard upside, but expect McCain to settle in as a shooter off the bench in his first NBA season. Lonnie Walker IV is a more explosive athlete (McCain only had one dunk at Duke), but an offensively-oriented guard like Walker - or the ongoing twilight years of Eric Gordon - represent the vision of McCain's floor. His ability to shoot off screens will provide offensive utility, while a swing factor to monitor will be his handle.

McCain provided five points (2-7 FG, 1-2 3Pt), four rebounds, one assist and one steal in 28 minutes during Sunday's 142-134 double-overtime loss to Atlanta.
ANALYSIS McCain did not have a great night from the field and did not have much of an impact in his 28 minutes, even with the team playing in two overtime periods. On the season, McCain is averaging 6.8 points, 1.6 rebounds, 1.1 assists, 0.8 steals and 1.3 threes made across 17.1 minutes.

2024 Fantasy Outlook
Coming off a strong freshman season at Duke, McCain was selected by the 76ers with the No. 16 overall pick in the 2024 NBA Draft. His three-point shot wasn't great during Summer League action, shooting 25.5 percent across eight appearances, but he shot 41.4 percent on 5.8 attempts per game in college. McCain's size raises concerns about his defensive upside at the NBA level, but the effort is constant, showing glimpses of being a lock-down perimeter defender a la Patrick Beverley. As a rookie, it'll be hard for McCain to find the court. The 76ers re-signed Kyle Lowry to serve as the primary backup to Tyrese Maxey, and they added Reggie Jackson and Eric Gordon to provide backcourt depth, not to mention the additions of Paul George, Caleb Martin, Andre Drummond and Guerschon Yabusele in the frontcourt. Philly is in a win-now mode, and it's unclear if McCain can contribute right away. With so many veterans ahead of him, McCain doesn't need to be drafted in standard leagues. However, given his all-around skill set, McCain is a name to watch if injuries pile up in Philadelphia.

ANALYSIS "I think each game is just getting more reps on the knee and more reps of movement. But I felt really good Sunday, McCain said. "Felt like I got a little burst for my first step, and yeah, just continue to build off each game. And the more minutes I play and the more time I'm in, I feel like I can get more reps up. And yeah, it felt really good." McCain put up a season-high 15 points in Sunday's loss to Miami and knocked down a few three-pointers in 26 minutes. If he can string a couple of good games together, McCain could become a popular waiver-wire pickup.
