Jamal Shead

Jamal Shead

23-Year-Old GuardG
Toronto Raptors
2024 Fantasy Outlook
A 2024 second-round pick, Shead appeared in 75 regular-season games (11 starts) for the injury-depleted Raptors as a rookie, averaging 19.6 minutes per game. When everyone is healthy, Toronto's starting lineup will consist of Immanuel Quickley, RJ Barrett, Brandon Ingram, Scottie Barnes and Jakob Poeltl. The top backcourt backups will be Gradey Dick, Shead, Ochai Agbaji, Jamison Battle and Ja'Kobe Walter. While that means Shead will likely have a role on Opening Night, it's safe to assume he won't see enough usage to be fantasy relevant when the Raptors' starters are available. Read Past Outlooks

Personal Bio/PreCareer Summary

Shead began his high school career at John B. Connally in Texas and later transferred to Manor High School. As a junior, Shead led his team to the state tournament for the first time in school history, earning District 18-5A Most Valuable Player honors. As a senior, he helped Manor win the District 18-5A title. Considered a three-star prospect by 247Sports, Shead committed to play college basketball for Houston. While Shead received limited playing time as a freshman, he made 32 starts as a sophomore and was named to the All-AAC Third Team. The following year, the 6-foot guard was named to the All-AAC Second Team and earned AAC Defensive Player of the Year honors. As a senior, Shead averaged 12.9 points, 6.3 assists, 3.7 rebounds and 2.2 steals in 31.1 minutes across 37 appearances. For his efforts, he was named the Big 12 Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year, becoming the first player to win both awards in the same season. Shead's biggest strength is his standout perimeter defense. The 6-foot guard is adept at navigating screens, keeping opponents in front of him, and forcing turnovers through jumping passing lanes and maintaining active hands. Shead is also a good playmaker, able to find teammates all over the court as a primary ball-handler. Shead's game is reminiscent of Tre Jones and Kris Dunn due to his elite perimeter defense combined with the ability to create open shots for teammates. Shead's skillset could allow him to develop into a quality backup point at the next level who can fit seamlessly alongside volume scorers.

Shead is in the Raptors' starting lineup against the Warriors on Tuesday.
ANALYSIS
Tuesday marks Shead's fifth start in six games as he'll join Immanuel Quickley in the backcourt while the Raptors opt to start Scottie Barnes at center due to the absences of Jakob Poeltl (back) and Collin Murray-Boyles (thumb). Since Jan. 3, Shead has averaged 9.1 points, 6.3 assists, 1.7 rebounds, 1.3 threes and 0.9 steals over 26.8 minutes per game.

Sets new career high in scoring
GToronto Raptors
January 12, 2026
Shead scored a career-high 22 points during Sunday's 116-115 win over the 76ers.
ANALYSIS
Shead took full advantage of his second start of the 2025-26 season. The Raptors were without the services of RJ Barrett, Jakob Poeltl and Ja'Kobe Walter on Sunday, which opened the door for Shead and company to take over the matchup. Shead should continue to see opportunities to produce until Toronto can shake the injury bug.
