After a promising rookie season, the No. 18 overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft took a significant step back last season. Jaquez played eight fewer minutes per night, which dramatically reduced all of his counting stats except for rebounds, and his efficiency suffered in all three categories. The poor performance may have been related to a few lingering injuries throughout the campaign, but either way, it was a disappointing effort given the opportunities available during Jimmy Butler's trade demand. Miami has retooled in the post-Butler era, parting ways with Duncan Robinson and Haywood Highsmith, while acquiring Norman Powell, drafting Kasparas Jakucionis and signing Simone Fontecchio. Youngsters Pelle Larsson, Keshad Johnson and Nikola Jovic are also chomping at the bit and waiting for their turn to shine. However, the offense will be led by Tyler Herro, Bam Adebayo and Andrew Wiggins when everybody is healthy. Herro will miss the start of the campaign after undergoing offseason surgery on his foot, but he should make a full recovery by Thanksgiving. The 24-year-old Jaquez still has plenty of upside, evidenced by his massive outing against Washington during the regular-season finale. With the Heat's key players resting, Jaquez notched 41 points (17-25 FG, 2-6 3Pt, 5-7 FT), 10 rebounds and seven assists in 41 minutes. He's still worth a flier at the end of standard drafts, but Jaquez's fantasy floor took a massive hit during his sophomore campaign, making him a risky selection. Read Past Outlooks

Personal Bio/PreCareer Summary
Jaime Jaquez Jr. spent the last four seasons playing the UCLA Bruins, ranking eighth all-time in points (1,802), eighth in steals (178) and 11th in rebounds (842) in school history. He averaged 17.8 points, 8.2 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.5 steals across 37 games in 2022-23. For his efforts, the senior forward was named a consensus second-team All-American and 2023 Pac-12 Player of the Year. Throughout his collegiate career, he also earned Pac-12 All-Freshman Team honors and made the Pac-12 All-Defensive Team twice. Before UCLA, Jaquez played at Camarillo High School in Camarillo, California. Not only was he named to the first-team All-CIF Southern Section all four years, but he also played two seasons of varsity baseball as a pitcher and first baseman. Jaquez competed for the Mexican National Team in 2019 at the Pan American Games. Jaquez has good size and strength for a forward. He has good footwork in the post and can create his own shot or generate looks for his teammates. Jaquez is a crafty finisher but has also shown the ability to step outside for jump shots from the midrange and three. He is a smart defender who is adept at reading passing lanes. Jaquez will likely begin his career competing for playing time but has the potential to develop into a quality bench player. His game has shades of Rui Hachimura and Anthony Lamb due to his strong rebounding profile and ability to finish around the rim.

2023 Fantasy Outlook
Jaquez played all four years in college at UCLA, ranking eighth all-time in points (1,802), eighth in steals (178) and 11th in rebounds (842) in school history. He averaged 17.8 points, 8.2 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 1.5 steals across 37 games in 2022-23. For his efforts, the senior forward was named a consensus second-team All-American and 2023 Pac-12 Player of the Year. Jaquez has nice size and strength for a forward. He has good footwork in the post and can create his own shot or generate looks for his teammates. He is a crafty finisher but has also shown the ability to step outside for jump shots from the midrange and three. He is a smart defender who is adept at reading passing lanes, though he may not be a plus defender at the NBA level. The Heat selected Jaquez with the No. 18 pick in the 2023 Draft. He made two Summer League appearances before suffering a shoulder injury, totaling 26 points, four rebounds, three assists and one steal in 38 minutes. Jaquez's role for the upcoming season is a bit unclear, partially due to the potential trade for Damian Lillard. For the time being, the rookie should be an every-game player for Miami, especially with the team being relatively thin at forward. It seems unlikely he'll see enough run for fantasy consideration, however.

Improving as playmaker
FMiami Heat
January 1, 2026
Jaquez is improving as a playmaker and is averaging a career-high 4.8 assists per game, according to Ira Winderman.
ANALYSIS Head coach Erik Spoelstra praised Jaquez's improved playmaking and vision this season. "He has an ability to get downhill, get into the paint, use his physicality," he said. Jaquez had averaged 2.6 and 2.5 assists per game in his previous two years in the NBA. The former UCLA product continues to make a strong case to be considered among the favorites for the NBA Sixth Man of the Year award.
