This summer, the Celtics drafted Gonzalez with the 28th overall pick. The 19-year-old spent the 2024-25 season with Real Madrid and had trouble receiving consistent playing time on what was a veteran-laden squad. The 6-foot-6 slashing Spaniard is an athletic wing with the potential to also play point guard. He's joining Boston at the right time. After multiple all-in seasons, the Celtics need to treat 2025-26 as a bridge season towards 2026-27 and the return of injured star Jayson Tatum (Achilles). That means they need to develop talent, escape the second apron and maintain roster flexibility. With the departure of both Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis, plus the absence of Tatum, there are plenty of available minutes in Boston. If the C's are serious about their plans to develop Gonzalez, they would be wise to let him play more than the 10 minutes per contest he received with Real Madrid. Unfortunately, much of that playing time may occur with the Maine Celtics of the G League. We'll see. Read Past Outlooks
$Signed a two-year, $5.71 million contract with the Celtics in July of 2025. Contract includes $3.06 million team option for 2027-28.
Personal Bio/PreCareer Summary
Gonzalez was born in Madrid, Spain and joined Real Madrid's youth team before he turned 10. He was a star for the youth team and eventually earned a spot on the junior/reserve teams. In 2022, Gonzalez was part of the U17 team that took silver in the 2022 FIBA Basketball World Cup after losing to the United States. In 2023, Gonzalez earned another silver medal after Spain's U18 team lost to Serbia in the FIBA European Championship. Last season, Gonzalez played for the senior Real Madrid team in the EuroLeague. At just 19 years old, it's impressive that Gonzalez was even considered to make the senior squad, but he was a bench player, averaging 10 minutes a game across 57 appearances (seven starts). Gonzalez is an athletic, big guard who thrives in pick-and-roll settings, which is becoming the norm at the NBA level. When he can't just blow by defenders with speed and athleticism, Gonzalez patiently uses screens and his size to navigate into the paint. However, the youngster struggled to finish around the rim at a high rate and left his feet to make too many careless passes. Despite those struggles, Gonzalez shows promise as a point guard who puts constant pressure on the rim and finds the open guy when defenses collapse. Gonzalez's shooting mechanics are also solid, but he's been more of a slasher than a sharpshooter with Real Madrid. Defensively, Gonzalez again takes too many chances, but he's quick and athletic enough to keep NBA guards in front of him. Gonzalez doesn't have as high of an upside as Cade Cunningham (6'6, 220) or Luka Doncic (6'6, 230), but the Spaniard could develop into a secondary playmaker like Austin Reaves (6'5, 197) or Ty Jerome (6'5, 194). Reaves is a starter and Jerome comes off the bench, but both players handle the ball a ton for their respective squads and are primary offensive initiators when on the court.
ANALYSIS With Sam Hauser (hamstring) back in the lineup after a one-game absence, Gonzalez will slide to the second unit. Over six appearances (one start) so far this month, the rookie first-rounder has averaged 2.7 points and 4.2 rebounds in 15.5 minutes per tilt.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Thriving in minor role
FBoston Celtics
December 29, 2025
Gonzalez has been a pleasant surprise for the Celtics this season, according to Brian Robb of MassLive.
ANALYSIS Gonzalez has adjusted to life in the NBA rather quickly, despite not playing much for Real Madrid in the 2024-25 EuroLeague and ACB campaigns. The 19-year-old Spanish forward seems to have secured a bench role in Joe Mazzulla's system due to his high basketball IQ and elite defensive potential.
