2024 Fantasy Outlook
Playing in his fourth NBA season, Mitchell began the campaign in Toronto following a three-year stint in Sacramento. He wasn't able to find his footing with the Raptors, as he averaged a mere 6.3 points, 4.6 assists, 1.9 rebounds and 0.7 steals on 43.4 percent shooting in 24.5 minutes per contest. A mid-season trade to Miami revitalized his fantasy appeal, as he appeared in 30 regular-season games with averages of 10.3 points, 5.3 assists, 2.7 rebounds and 1.4 steals while shooting 50.4 percent from the field and 44.7 percent from beyond the arc. The Heat re-signed him for two years and $24 million, but the rest of their offseason was pretty quiet other than the acquisition of Norman Powell. The Heat seem comfortable with Tyler Herro and Powell as their starting backcourt, setting up Mitchell to potentially be the first guard off the bench. Terry Rozier is still around, but he's on the trade block, and the Heat have seemingly lost patience with him after a dreadful 2024-25 season. That said, Herro is expected to miss the onset of the season due to offseason foot surgery, which positions Mitchell as the team's most likely candidate to open the new year as their starting point guard. Mitchell is a decent source of steals and assists with a trickle of three-pointers, but it's fair to question if he'll see enough usage to warrant a late-round pick, even with a projected uptick in minutes while Herro is sidelined. Plus, based on career shooting averages, Mitchell's splits in Miami last season look unsustainable. Read Past Outlooks

Personal Bio/PreCareer Summary

Mitchell's three-year collegiate career ended with a ring, as he and the Baylor Bears were crowned 2021 NCAA National Champions. His career began at Auburn, though, where Mitchell appeared primarily as a reserve, logging 17.1 mpg in 34 contests. He proceeded to transfer and sit a season before catching on with Baylor, where he earned a starting spot immediately. Mitchell's junior year saw him average 9.9 points and 3.8 assists en route to third-team All-Big 12 honors. He ramped up his production in a major way the following season, making the first-team All-Big 12 behind averages of 14.0 ppg, 5.5. apg and 2.7 rpg. His efficiency couldn't be matched within the conference, as he led the Big 12 in true shooting percentage and effective field-goal percentage. Most impressive were his defensive contributions, however, as Mitchell was named to the conference all-defensive team for the second consecutive season, as well as named 2020-21 Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year.

Makes defensive impact in return
GMiami Heat
January 20, 2026
Mitchell (shoulder) provided seven points (1-6 FG, 1-4 3Pt, 4-4 FT), six rebounds, three assists, three steals and one block in 25 minutes Monday in the Heat's 135-112 loss to the Warriors.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell stepped back in as the Heat's starting point guard after missing the team's previous two games due to a left shoulder contusion. Though he didn't come through with elevated production in the scoring or assists columns while backcourt mate Tyler Herro (ribs) was sidelined, Mitchell at least contributed useful numbers in the defensive categories. Assuming he experienced no setbacks with the shoulder Monday and that the Heat are able to stay more competitive with the Kings in Tuesday's contest, Mitchell could be in line to see increased playing time in the second leg of a back-to-back set.

2021
It's rare to see a second-year player take such a drastic step backward, but that's what we saw with Mitchell. After averaging 11.5 points, 2.2 rebounds, 4.2 assists and 0.7 steals in his rookie year, Mitchell averaged just 5.6 points, 1.3 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 0.6 steals last season. It's easy to understand why because De'Aaron Fox took a step into stardom while Malik Monk and Kevin Huerter played playmaker when Fox was off the floor. We all know that Mitchell is one of the best defensive guards in the NBA, but he's not on the floor enough to impact fantasy. This breakout team also decided to stay pat in the offseason, and it's unlikely anything will change in this rotation with all the pieces remaining the same. There's simply no opportunity for Mitchell to produce with Fox in town, and a change of scenery might be his only choice if he wants to become a starter at some point. This is still a third-year player who was taken with the No. 9 pick, though, and we expect his averages to fall in the middle of those first two years. This is one of those guys who's a better real-life player than a fantasy option, and he should remain on your waiver wires unless something happens to Fox.
Mitchell appeared in 75 games as a rookie last year and averaged 11.5 points, 4.2 assists and 2.2 rebounds across 27.7 minutes per game. He shot 41.8 percent from the field, 31.6 percent from three and 65.9 percent from the free-throw line. However, he really saw an uptick in production during the stretch run while De'Aaron Fox was sidelined due to a hand injury, posting 18.8 points and 9.3 assists across the last 11 games of the season, including three double-doubles with assist totals of 17 and 15 in two of those games. As a starter (19 games), he averaged 18.0 points, 7.4 assists and 2.3 rebounds across 37.1 minutes per game. Despite the absence of Tyrese Haliburton, the No. 9 overall pick still figures to open the 2022-23 campaign as a backup after the additions of Kevin Huerter and Malik Monk this offseason. He also may face some competition from defensive-minded guard Matthew Dellavedova, who's returning to NBA action after playing in Australia last year. Still, the Kings will almost certainly prioritize Mitchell's development over playing time for the veteran.
One of the breakout stars in college basketball last season, Mitchell helped carry the Baylor Bears to a win over Gonzaga in the National Championship Game. The No. 9 overall pick joins a Kings roster that already features De'Aaron Fox, Buddy Hield and Tyrese Haliburton, so it's not immediately clear where he'll fit in. At worst, Mitchell figures to serve as the backup point guard, but he may have trouble gaining fantasy relevance in Year 1 -- particularly if his three-point shot doesn't translate. To his credit, Mitchell knocked down an outstanding 44.7 percent of his looks last season, but he shot just 32.4 percent and 28.8 percent, respectively, in his previous two collegiate seasons. He's also a very poor free throw shooter for a guard, hitting just 64.1 percent of his attempts in 2020-21. Steals will be the other category to keep a close eye on. Mitchell has already built a strong reputation as an elite, intense one-on-one defender -- 1.9 SPG last season -- and he only bolstered it during Summer League play.

Drawing trade interest

Mitchell has drawn league-wide interest thanks to his defense and career-high assist numbers, Michael Scotto of USA Today reports.
ANALYSIS
Mitchell remains under team control next season, increasing his appeal in trade discussions. Miami could use him as a value piece in larger negotiations, and he could be a target for a team like Memphis if the Ja Morant trade talks gain any traction. Through 38 regular-season games, Mitchell holds averages of 9.1 points, 7.3 assists and 1.2 steals.
