Fantasy managers were excited to see what Thompson could do at the end of his rookie season, and he built on that even more as a sophomore. He began the year coming off the bench but eventually took a starting spot from fellow young-gun Jabari Smith. In Thompson's final 41 regular-season appearances, he averaged 15.6 points on 55.8 percent from the floor, 9.1 rebounds, 5.0 assists, 1.6 steals and 1.5 blocks in 36.0 minutes. He established himself first and foremost as a defender, earning First Team All-Defense honors. And while Thompson is also a gifted passer and rebounder, the most important upgrade he'll need to make to his game is shooting. For his career, he's just 33-for-149 (22.1%) from distance and 275-for-402 (68.5%) from the charity stripe. But even if that never develops in a meaningful way, Thompson is already a starting-caliber NBA player and a top-50 fantasy asset. This season, the Rockets look different, swapping out Jalen Green and Dillon Brooks for Kevin Durant and Dorian Finney-Smith. It's a major team upgrade, but very similar usage-to-usage. That means Thompson still has a runway to grow as a player, especially as Fred VanVleet ages. There's a ceiling to what Thompson can do given his limited shooting and the relatively high-usage players around him, but with VanVleet likely to spend almost all of the regular season on the sidelines to nurse a torn ACL, Thompson is still one of the best upside picks in fantasy and should spend more time with the ball in his hands throughout 2025-26. Personal Bio/PreCareer Summary
Amen Thompson was a five-star recruit by ESPN who won a state high school basketball title with Pine Crest School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He and his brother, Ausar, bypassed their senior high school years to play in the Overtime Elite. In 2021, he played for Team OTE, where he averaged 14 points, 6.6 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 2.1 steals. Last season, he moved to City Reapers, where he averaged 16.3 points, 6.4 rebounds, 6.2 assists and 2.4 steals in 28.2 minutes. His team won the league title in a 3-0 sweep over the YNG Dreamerz. Thompson has been operating as a ballhandler and playmaker with wing size and elite athleticism. He plays best with spacers around him, as opponents often go under screens. Even with that being the case, Thompson's quickness and vertical leap help him blow past and rise over defenses with acrobatic finishes. When teams collapse, he finds the right man with an accurate pass. He's bothersome on defense and can beat his man to the spot, and he's shown good IQ in help situations. Thompson will likely need the ball in his hands at the NBA level to unlock his full potential, which could be All-Star level, but how quickly he gets there may depend on if he lands on a team with or without an established point guard. Unquestionably, he'll get easy points and make a defensive impact through his top-shelf athleticism, but playing off ball isn't his strong suit. Thompson holds similarities to a wing-sized Ja Morant or a more athletic Ben Simmons.
All-around effort in Friday's win
GHouston Rockets
March 6, 2026
Thompson posted 26 points (11-12 FG, 4-6 FT), seven rebounds, seven assists, two steals and one block over 39 minutes during the Rockets' 106-99 win over the Trail Blazers on Friday.
ANALYSIS Thompson scored 16 of his 26 points in the second half and missed just one shot from the field. He finished as the Rockets' assists leader and finished second on the team in rebounds and points behind Kevin Durant (eight boards) and Alperen Sengun (28 points), respectively. Thompson was able to play in both games of the Rockets' back-to-back set, which is a good sign seeing as he was listed as questionable ahead of both of those contests due to a right ankle sprain. He has averaged 21.5 points, 10.0 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 2.3 steals over 38.2 minutes per game in his last four outings.

2023
Despite playing just 22.4 minutes per game during his rookie season, Thompson flirted with standard league value, ending as the 140th-ranked player. He missed 19 games early in the season due to an ankle injury, limiting his opportunity to carve out a role on a young team laden with talent. He finished the season strong, closing with a triple-double on the final night. However, his output was largely due to the fact that Alperen Sengun was shut down due to injury. The Rockets are a team on the rise and Thompson is likely to be a key piece for them moving forward. With that said, he will have to contend with players like Cam Whitmore and Tari Eason, not to mention impressive rookie Reed Sheppard, with all looking to make a case for more playing time. Thompson's offensive game remains a work in progress, something that could limit his short-term appeal. However, a proven ability to contribute across multiple categories while providing elite rebounding numbers from the guard/wing position should ensure he has a consistent role. Uncertainty aside, Thompson is worth considering as a late-round pick, just in case he asserts himself early in the campaign.

Last season, for City Reapers, he averaged 16.3 points, 6.4 rebounds, 6.2 assists and 2.4 steals in 28.2 minutes. Thompson has been operating as a ballhandler and playmaker with wing size and elite athleticism. He plays best with spacers around him, as opponents often go under screens due to his rough shooting. Thompson will likely need the ball in his hands to unlock his full potential, which could be All-Star level, but his role on Houston as a rookie is somewhat murky. The team brought in veteran point guard Fred VanVleet during the offseason, and Jalen Green figures to handle the ball plenty in the backcourt as well. The team doesn't hesitate to run action through Alperen Sengun in the post, either. The concern about Thompson playing off ball is that he can't shoot. His form is poor, and he even shot just 64.6 percent from the charity stripe in the OTE. He should still be able to do enough as a passer, rebounder and defender to make an impact in fantasy, but he figures to be better in points leagues.

Dealing with tendinitis
GHouston Rockets
February 26, 2026
Rockets head coach Ime Udoka said Thompson is dealing with quad tendinitis that has flared up on and off over the past few weeks, according to Lachard Binkley of SI.com.
ANALYSIS The issue appears to be more maintenance-related than a new injury, but it's clearly lingered long enough to warrant at least a short absence. Udoka indicated the team is hopeful it will cost Thompson just one game, suggesting the Rockets don't view it as a long-term concern. Still, tendinitis can be tricky if aggravated, so his status will be worth monitoring going forward.
