2025 Fantasy Outlook
Helsley entered 2024 with a tentative grasp on the closer role in St. Louis, but the hard-throwing righty led the majors with 49 saves, setting the Cardinals franchise record for a single season. Prior to the campaign, he had yet to achieve a 20-save season and had trouble staying healthy, but Helsley rewarded drafters who exhibited a higher risk tolerance. In fact, he did not miss any time, establishing new career highs in games played (65) and innings pitched (66.1). Helsey's 89.1 percent team save share was the second-highest mark among closers. The injury risk remains for someone who throws as hard as Helsley does -- he averaged 99.6 mph on his fastball (fifth among relievers) -- but the 30-year-old still warrants a pick among the top-10 closers for 2025. Just keep in mind this is Helsley's final year of salary arbitration before he becomes a free agent. If the Cardinals aren't competitive in 2025, he'll be a likely trade candidate. Read Past Outlooks
Signs with Baltimore
Helsley signed a two-year, $28 million contract with the Orioles on Saturday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Helsley's new deal will also give him the ability to opt out after the first season. Multiple teams were pursuing the right-hander with hopes of converting him to a starter, but Passan states that Helsley will remain in a closing role upon joining the Orioles. The 31-year-old got off to a strong start this past season in St. Louis, posting a 3.00 ERA and 1.39 WHIP alongside 41:14 K:BB across 36 innings and tallying 21 saves. He then regressed considerably after being traded to the Mets and finished the year giving up 16 earned runs over his final 20 frames. Despite his poor finish, Helsley still boasts a career 2.96 ERA and is just one year removed from tallying an MLB-high 49 saves in 2024, keeping him worthy of fantasy attention next season.

Sustaining the level of success he achieved during his breakout 2022 season was a longshot, but Helsley's follow-up campaign certainly fell short of expectations. Injury was mostly to blame as the hard-throwing righty missed two-and-a-half months with a right forearm strain. Injuries have been a constant for the 29-year-old, who has missed time during each of his five seasons to date. Prior to the forearm strain, Helsley split closing duties and struggled to a 1.26 WHIP. Upon returning from injury in September, the flamethrower ended the year on a high note, recording 7 of the Cardinals' final 8 saves while routinely hitting triple-digits on the radar gun - maxing out at 102.8 mph. Helsley posted a 0.77 ERA, 0.86 WHIP and 19:6 K:BB ratio over his final 11.2 innings to remind fantasy managers of the upside he possesses. However, weighing that upside against the risks may prove too difficult for some, especially since Helsley has yet to post a 20-save season.

Could be tipping pitches
Helsley said Thursday that he believes his struggles since being acquired from the Mets at the trade deadline are a result of tipping pitches, Will Sammon of The Athletic reports. "I think I know how to fix it," the right-hander said. "So it's just being able to enforce that and that being my mental norm versus what I was doing to get my body to accept that and reinforce that."

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Confirms interest from Detroit
According to Chelsea Janes of The Washington Post, Helsley confirmed that the Tigers were "in on [him] heavy" to sign as a starting pitcher, but he said it made more sense to sign with the Orioles as a reliever after weighing his options.
ANALYSIS
Detroit was the only club specifically mentioned to be looking at Helsley as a starting pitcher, but other clubs were reportedly also interested. After posting a 2.04 ERA with 49 saves in 2024, the right-hander had a bumpy season in 2025 for the Cardinals and Mets, finishing with a 4.50 ERA and 1.54 WHIP in 58 appearances. Despite that inconsistency, Helsley is expected to handle closing duties for Baltimore with Felix Bautista set to miss at least most of 2026 due to shoulder surgery.
