2026 Fantasy Outlook
Detmers moved to the bullpen in 2025 and enjoyed a bounce-back campaign, posting a 3.96 ERA, 1.30 WHIP and 80:25 K:BB over 61 relief appearances (63.2 innings) before a bout of left elbow inflammation ended his season. Tests showed no signs of structural damage, setting Detmers up for a normal winter. Prior to the injury, he posted a career-high 30.1 K%, coinciding with a jump in velocity while working in shorter spurts. Incredibly, he cut his home-run rate from 1.85 HR/9 to 0.85 HR/9. His 3.12 FIP was by far the best of his career. While some teams would be reluctant to mess with a good thing, the Angels are planning to move Detmers back into the starting rotation in 2026. That comes with the risk of injury, eventual fatigue and performance giveback, but he showed flashes as a starter early in his career and the Angels believe he is a different pitcher at this stage, one capable of making a difference in a starting role. Struggles with loud contact
Detmers (0-1) took the loss Wednesday against Atlanta, allowing six runs (five earned) on five hits and two walks in 4.1 innings. He struck out four.
Analysis
Hard contact plagued the left-hander Wednesday, as four of his knocks allowed went for extra bases. Detmers was never quite able to settle in either, giving up at least one run in each of the first three frames before being chased from the outing at 92 pitches with one out in the fifth. Detmers' return to the rotation this year has yielded mixed results -- he holds a 4.60 ERA, 1.28 WHIP and 17:6 K:BB over 15.2 innings -- and things won't get much easier with a tough matchup against the Yankees looming for his next start.

It feels like Detmers has been around forever, but the left-hander is still just 25 years old entering the 2025 season. He went 3-0 with two earned runs allowed over 17.2 innings in his first three starts last season, but then went 0-6 with an 8.93 ERA over his next eight to earn a trip back to Triple-A. Home runs doomed his return in September, as he served up eight homers in 24.1 innings down the stretch to push him up to an ugly 6.70 ERA for the season. Both lefties and righties slugged over .500 against Detmers last season. He still has multiple minor-league options remaining and will have to earn his spot with the Angels in spring training. Detmers' 26.8 percent strikeout rate over the past two seasons -- 16th among pitchers that have totaled 230 combined innings in that span -- and the fact that he has a no-hitter under his belt offer a shred of hope that the 2020 first-round pick could turn a corner.

Heading to arbitration hearing
Detmers requested $2.925 million and was offered $2.625 million by the Angels when arbitration figures were exchanged last week, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports.
Analysis
It's a relatively small gap, but the two sides weren't able to bridge it in order to avoid a hearing. Detmers is arbitration-eligible for the first time and is coming off a breakout 2025 season in his first year as a full-time reliever, posting a 3.96 ERA and 80:25 K:BB over 63.2 frames before a minor elbow issue ended his campaign a few weeks early. The Angels are expected to give the lefty another chance in their rotation in 2026.
