2026 Fantasy Outlook
The Cardinals' attempts to trade Arenado last offseason failed, and then Arenado failed to bounce back from a disappointing 2024 season with an even worse showing in 2025. For the second year in a row, Arenado finished with an xwOBA below .300, and his average exit velocity also ranked in the bottom-10 percentile for the second straight year. He remains an elite contact hitter, but not even an 11.2 percent strikeout rate could buoy Arenado's batting average, which tumbled to a career-low .237. A shoulder injury limited Arenado to only 23 games in the second half and likely hampered him before that, but it would be a stretch to assign much blame for Arenado's downfall to that injury. An offseason trade to the Diamondbacks gives Arenado a more favorable home park and a better supporting cast, but he simply looks like a player who no longer has much juice in his bat in his mid-30s. Traded to Diamondbacks
The Diamondbacks acquired Arenado and cash considerations from the Cardinals on Tuesday in exchange for Jack Martinez, John Gambadoro of Arizona Sports 98.7 FM reports.
Analysis
Arenado has agreed to waive his no-trade clause in order to facilitate a deal, and the Cardinals are expected to cover all but $11 million of what remains on the veteran third baseman's contract through 2027. An eight-time All-Star, Arenado has been in a steady decline offensively, having slashed .237/.289/.377 with 12 home runs over 107 contests in the 2025 regular season. He missed time with a shoulder issue, but Arenado finished the season healthy. Arenado -- who turns 35 in April -- will take over at third base in Arizona, which could push Jordan Lawlar to the outfield and Blaze Alexander to a utility role.

Stat Review
How does Nolan Arenado compare to other hitters?
This section compares his stats with all batting seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 400 plate appearances)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.
* Exit Velocity and Barrels/PA % are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 400 PA) and Hard Hit Rate is benchmarked against last season's data (min 400 PA). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.

Arenado's power output has trickled down every year since he arrived in St. Louis and it bottomed out to just 16 home runs in 2024. Part of that was probably out of his control with fly ball distance being down league-wide, but he also posted career lows in average exit velocity (86.3 mph), hard-hit rate (31.6 percent) and barrel rate (3.2 percent) and one of his lowest fly ball rates (39.1 percent). Dating back to August of 2023, Arenado hasn't hit more than four long balls in any of his last eight months. A rebound is possible, but with cavernous Busch Stadium as his home and his 34th birthday coming shortly after Opening Day, it's difficult to say a bounce-back is probable.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Arizona paying just $11 million
The Cardinals are covering the majority of Arenado's remaining salary, as the Diamondbacks will pay him just $5 million this year and $6 million in 2027, reports Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic.
Analysis
The veteran third baseman was traded from the Cardinals to the Diamondbacks last week in exchange for Jack Martinez and cash considerations, with the cash being a significant motivator of the deal. Arenado is owed $42 million for the final two years of his contract, and St. Louis will cover most of that after he finished 2025 with a career-worst .666 OPS and seven homers in 107 games. He'll provide some defensive stability at the hot corner for the Diamondbacks but shouldn't be expected to be a major contributor offensively.
