Goes unused in win
Englert was expected to work in a bulk-relief role during Monday's 3-1 win over the Red Sox, but he ended up going unused after opener Ian Seymour pitched the first four innings and five other relievers finished out the contest, Adam Berry of MLB.com reports.
Analysis
After being called up from Triple-A Durham last Wednesday, Englert proceeded to cover five innings of long relief behind starter Nick Martinez in the Rays' loss to the Tigers later that day. With the Rays announcing over the weekend that Steven Matz would be moved to the bullpen, Englert looked like a logical candidate to fill the open spot in the rotation. Instead, Seymour now looks like he could wind up getting stretched out for the vacated starting role, as he permitted just one hit and one walk while striking out five across 55 pitches Monday. Englert has underwhelmed over his 11 appearances (one start) with Tampa Bay this season, logging a 4.71 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 16:4 K:BB across 21 frames.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2023
The Tigers nabbed Englert in the Rule 5 Draft before the start of the 2023 season, which dropped him into an MLB bullpen role for the first time in his career. The righty struggled to make an impact, recording a 5.46 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 41 strikeouts across 56 innings in the majors. Without an overpowering fastball, it's hard to envision Englert becoming an elite relief option, though perhaps he'll show some improvement with a big-league season under his belt. He's also only 24, so there could still be room for growth as a pitcher. For now, Englert looks like a low-leverage reliever for Detroit, squarely behind the likes of Alex Lange, Jason Foley and others in the bullpen pecking order. A middle-relief role doesn't scream "fantasy star," so Englert is mostly off the radar at this point. He could see his stock go up if he starts to consistently get hold or save opportunities, though that doesn't appear to be imminent.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Rising in prospect rankings
Englert has been added to MLB.com's top-30 prospect list for the Rangers, reports Jim Callis of MLB.com.
Analysis
Englert's change to his delivery recently has paid dividends and played a big role in his ascension in prospect rankings. The 2018 fourth-round draft pick has made three starts for Double-A Frisco after posting a 3.57 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 116:26 K:BB in 103.1 innings for Single-A Hickory. He will be eligible for the Rule 5 draft this offseason if the Rangers do not add him to the 40-man roster after the season. It's unlikely that he'll be ready for a big-league roster spot in 2023 and Texas may risk it to protect some of its other prospects.
