Big Christmas was a lump of coal for the Guardians last season as he simply could not make contact with the baseball. He struck out 52 times while walking just 4 times in 153 plate appearances and all of his bat speed went more to cooling fans in the stands than it did creating souvenirs to those same fans. Teams rarely quit on the bat speed or power potential which Noel possesses, but he is now out of options while the club has more talented options ahead of him. It is very likely Noel is dealt, or claimed, by another club who wishes to give him a chance or give their Triple-A affiliate something fun to watch, but it is unlikely Noel will get to stick around in Cleveland this season as they simply have better talent in front of him without all the flaws. The Orioles outrighted Noel to Triple-A Norfolk on Wednesday, Rich Dubroff of BaltimoreBaseball.com reports.

Analysis
Noel was booted off the Orioles' 40-man roster last week shortly after being claimed off waivers. He passed through waivers this time around and will remain in the organization. Noel has slashed .193/.242/.401 with 19 home runs over 351 regular-season plate appearances at the major-league level.

After a torrid couple of months with Triple-A Columbus, Noel was called up in late June to provide the Guardians lineup with some much-needed punch. He didn't play regularly, but the right-handed batter appeared in 67 games over the final three months. His .246/.302/.667 line against lefties versus batting .205/.281/.402 facing right-handers suggests a platoon, but Noel logged more than twice as many plate appearances versus righties. His hard-hit rate is middling, but Noel is a fly-ball hitter with an elevated barrel rate, driving power. As with many uppercut swings, contact is an issue, especially since Noel swings at almost half the pitches he sees out of the zone. Not noted for his glove, he has a plus arm and plus speed, and was passable in right field. At minimum, Noel should face every southpaw starter, but with better swing decisions, he could be more.

Noel has tremendous power (80-grade) but needs to improve the rest of his game to get a real shot in the majors. Given that Noel was the second-youngest qualified hitter at Triple-A last year (behind Masyn Winn), he can be forgiven for struggling in the first half (.673 OPS). Noel slashed .246/.320/.451 with 14 home runs in 69 games during the second half for Triple-A Columbus en route to hitting .220/.303/.420 with 27 home runs overall. The 22-year-old had a 116.5 mph maximum exit velocity and a 106.3 mph 90th percentile exit velocity, but he also made too much soft contact (24.7 percent), so he could benefit in 2024 from being more selective at the plate. While he can handle first base and the corner outfield spots in a pinch, Noel's best shot at consistent playing time in Cleveland could come at designated hitter.

Noel has 80-grade raw power. The rest of the profile is pretty shaky, which is why he is still extremely risky despite reaching Triple-A as a 21-year-old. There are similarities to Franmil Reyes and Bobby Bradley, past Guardians sluggers who were cut loose in 2022. He isn't great at making contact in the zone and is even worse at laying off pitches out of the zone. Defensively, Noel is limited to playing a bad first base/left field or slotting in at designated hitter, so he needs to log solid on-base percentages or he won't play. He was young for the levels, but last year's .310 OBP across the three highest levels of the minors won't cut it.

Noel is a very big boy who hits the ball very hard and very far. It wouldn't be unfair to compare him in many ways to org. mate Franmil Reyes, as he may end up sliding all the way to designated hitter and will probably always strike out at fairly high clip, but his mammoth power could carry him to an everyday job. He hit .340/.390/.615 with 19 home runs, a 21.4 K% and a 5.9 BB% in 70 games in his age-19/20 season, primarily at Low-A and High-A. Adept at getting the ball in the air, Noel logged groundball rates below 34% at both levels, and his 33.3 Hard% was excellent for a player his age making his full-season debut. Don't read too much into that .340 batting average -- he had a .421 BABIP at Low-A and figures to strike out at least 25% of the time when he gets to the majors.
