2026 Fantasy Outlook
After breaking out as a full-time starter with the White Sox in 2024, Crochet was traded to the Red Sox last winter and established himself as one of the best pitchers in MLB during 2025. He posted an 18-5 record with a 2.59 ERA, 1.05 WHIP and 46 walks across 205.1 innings while leading the league with 255 strikeouts. Despite setting a career-high workload by nearly 60 innings, the left-hander still averaged 97.6 mph on his fastball and maintained excellent control, with his 5.7 percent walk rate ranking 10th among qualified starters. Now entering his age-27 season and third year as a full-time starter, it's possible Crochet has yet to reach his ceiling. He's already a true ace with a high floor given his strikeout numbers, and he'll enter 2026 as one of the top candidates for the AL Cy Young Award. Read Past Outlooks
Throws bullpen session
Crochet (shoulder) threw a 20-pitch bullpen session Wednesday, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports.
Analysis
Crochet pitched off a mound for the first time since hitting the injured list last month with shoulder inflammation. Next up for the left-hander is an expected two-inning bullpen session this weekend in Atlanta. If Crochet feels good coming out of that longer session, then he could face hitters by the middle of next week, putting him on schedule for a potential return during the last week of May. The Red Sox could follow a similar path as the one laid out for Sonny Gray when he dealt with a hamstring injury earlier this season, which could enable Crochet to return to the rotation without going on a rehab assignment beforehand.

Crochet's career trajectory has been anything but traditional as he made his MLB debut for the White Sox in 2020 without first playing in the minors, and he transitioned to the starting rotation in 2024 without having previously made a professional start. The left-hander was dominant despite being on the worst team in the history of MLB, and he finished the campaign with a 3.58 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 209:33 K:BB over 146 innings. Chicago elected not to trade him at the summer deadline and heavily monitored his workload across the final three months of the season, during which he never pitched more than four innings. He also labored in those final 14 starts with a 4.84 ERA, but those struggles aren't a major surprise given it was his first season as a professional starter. The Red Sox acquired Crochet for a package of prospects this winter, so he'll be pitching his home games in one of the most hitter-friendly parks in the game but should also get much better run support and defense than the White Sox gave him a year ago.

Throwing, but return not imminent
Crochet (shoulder) has resumed playing catch from 60 feet and is making progress in his strengthening program, but the southpaw is unlikely to return from the 15-day injured list when first eligible next Tuesday, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports. "We're still strengthening, we're still throwing and we're increasing intensity as he goes," Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy said Thursday. "So we're just going to continue that track until we feel the strength numbers are where they're supposed to be, he feels good and he can ramp up more."

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Cy Young finalist in AL
Crochet has been named a finalist for the 2025 American League Cy Young Award.
Analysis
Crochet made 32 starts for Boston in the 2025 regular season and was outstanding, going 18-5 with a 2.59 ERA and 255 strikeouts in 205.1 innings. Crochet also showed his worth in the playoffs, as he tossed 7.2 innings and fanned 11 in a 3-1 win over the Yankees in Game 1 of the AL Wild Card round, although that would be his lone appearance in the postseason. Crochet, who's under contract with the Red Sox until the end of the 2031 season, has a realistic shot at winning the award, although he's competing with Tarik Stubal and Hunter Brown.
