Rest-of-Season Projections
2025 Fantasy Outlook
Valdez spent the last two seasons on Boston's carousel of second basemen. During his time with the organization, the lefty-hitting middle infielder showed pop potential, swatting 16 and 17 home runs between Triple-A and MLB in 2023 and 2024, respectively. Last season in the majors, he was better-than-average in hard-hit percentage (41.8), barrel percentage (9.2) and exit velocity (89.4). Those peripherals apparently intrigued the Pirates into giving up a minor-league reliever for Valdez, who joins a crowded infield. Nick Gonzalez finished out 2024 as the primary second baseman and entered camp as the putative starter in 2025. Read Past Outlooks
Back in action in winter ball
Valdez (shoulder) has returned to game action with the Estrellas Orientales in the Dominican Winter League, Alex Stumpf of MLB.com reports.
ANALYSIS
Valdez underwent season-ending surgery in May to repair a dislocated left shoulder, but he's played three winter ball games and smacked a grand slam in his third contest for Estrellas on Sunday. Slated to turn 27 later this month, Valdez slashed .209/.294/.363 with two home runs and an 11:16 BB:K over 102 plate appearances for Pittsburgh before getting hurt. It seems Valdez will ready to roll for the start of spring training and he'll compete for a spot on the Pirates' Opening Day roster in 2026.

Past Fantasy Outlooks
2024
2023
The Red Sox acquired Vaughn Grissom in the Chris Sale trade with the expectation that Grissom would be the Opening Day second baseman in 2024. However, it could end up being Valdez at the keystone instead, if the groin strain Grissom suffered early in spring training costs him the start of the season, as feared. After a long climb through the Houston organization, Valdez was traded to Boston at the 2022 deadline in the Christian Vazquez deal. Valdez finally debuted in the majors in April last year and played in 49 games with the Red Sox around missed time due to thumb and hamstring injuries. Although Valdez is not tall in stature, there is legitimate power in his bat. He muscled 16 home runs in just 106 games between Triple-A and the majors last season after blasting 28 long balls across three stops the year prior.
