The Mariners had an offensive explosion against the Braves on Sunday, scoring 18 runs in Atlanta. That came on the heels of scoring 10 runs in a victory Saturday. Their additions of Eugenio Suarez and Josh Naylor at the trade deadline have provided a boost to their lineup. Over the last 30 days, the Mariners have the seventh-highest OPS (.768) in baseball.
Miles Mikolas will start this game for the Cardinals, giving a significant advantage to the Mariners' lineup. Mikolas has a 4.96 xFIP and a 1.64 WHIP on the road this season. A major issue for him is that he has allowed 2.6 HR/9 away from St. Louis. For our first wager in this game, let's roll with the Mariners to score at least four runs through seven innings.
The Mariners are heavy favorites to begin this series with a victory. Not only could they score a lot of runs, but they will have Bryan Woo on the mound. He is in the midst of another excellent season with a 3.02 ERA that is fully supported by a 3.15 xERA. At home, he has a 0.83 WHIP. Taking the Mariners to win while not needing to bat in the bottom of the ninth inning is significantly more appealing than just taking them on the moneyline, given the difference in the odds.
