Comes from behind to snag contract
Christian defeated Francesco Mazzeo via submission (armbar) at 4:17 of Round 2 at Dana White's Tuesday Night Contender Series. After the show, he was one of five fighters to earn an official UFC contract.
ANALYSIS
The first thing an observer notices about Christian is his massive frame, as he stands at 6-7 with an 80-inch reach, which are large measurements even for the light heavyweight division. That lanky build will make him susceptible to takedowns, however, which was the case in Round 1 on Tuesday, as he was controlled for 3:51 and simply couldn't get anything going. He was more cautious about that in Round 2, but he ate some big shots on the feet and eventually succumbed to the takedown towards the middle of the round. Fortunately, Mazzeo was gassed at this point, and Christian took advantage by throwing his legs up for a triangle and eventually finding the armbar submission. It wasn't pretty, but it was enough to earn a contract in a thin, 205-pound division.
