Mason Black

25-Year-Old PitcherRP
Kansas City Royals
2025 Fantasy Outlook
Black is one of the higher-ranked prospects in the San Francisco organization. He is a former third-round pick after impressive work for Lehigh University and has since pitched effectively as a minor league starter with 378 strikeouts in 320 innings of work. His time in the majors in 2024 was a humbling experience, as the league enjoyed a lot of success off him, hanging a 6.44 ERA and a 1.68 WHIP on him over nine games while hitting over .300 on his three primary pitch offerings. The one area of success he had in the majors was his slider, which was a no-hitter on the season as nobody safely batted one of his 39 sliders into play. Black's calling card is a delivery that provides better than average extension, allowing his pitches to play up a bit more like a Joe Ryan, but only his slider grades as an above-average pitch on the pitch modeling. The extension allowed him to get a better than average whiff rate on a four-seamer, which had a .333 average against, so the path to success for Black could very well be a move to the pen to focus on a fastball and slider approach. Simply put, his outcomes since graduating out of Double-A have been challenging between the big-league humbling and the run environments of the PCL. Read Past Outlooks

ANALYSIS
Black had been designated for assignment by the Giants last week and will now join the Royals' 40-man roster. The 25-year-old spent most of this season at Triple-A Sacramento, where he held a 5.81 ERA and 1.48 WHIP alongside a 114:62 K:BB over 119.1 innings. Black has been used mostly as a starting pitcher to this point in his pro career, though it's not known whether the Royals intend to keep him in that role. The righty has minor-league options remaining.

Stat Review
How does Mason Black compare to other relievers?
This section compares his stats with all relief pitcher seasons from the previous three seasons (minimum 30 innings)*. The bar represents the player's percentile rank. For example, if the bar is halfway across, then the player falls into the 50th percentile for that stat and it would be considered average.

* Exit Velocity, Barrels/BBE %, Balls Hit 95+ MPH %, and Spin Rate are benchmarked against 2019 data (min 30 IP). See here for more exit velocity/barrels stats plus an explanation of current limitations with that data set.
  • K/BB

2024 Fantasy Outlook
A sinker/slider righty whose shallow arsenal may limit his upside, Black is knocking on the door of the majors after making 13 starts at Triple-A. The 6-foot-3, 230-pound burgeoning workhorse built up to 123.2 innings while striking out 155 and walking 52. His 94-mph sinker can touch 97 mph and his slider sits in the mid-80s. Black has dabbled with a curveball, cutter and changeup, but he is mostly a two-pitch pitcher. Generally sinker/slider types generate groundballs at high clips, but Black had a 41.7 percent groundball rate at Double-A and a 39.9 percent groundball rate at Triple-A. Fortunately, Oracle Park ranks 27th in Statcast's home run park factor, so a flyball approach isn't the worst thing. Black could be a useful streamer in favorable home starts as a rookie, but he projects as a No. 4 or No. 5 starter long term.

Latest Fantasy Rumors
Might be rotation option soon
PSan Francisco Giants
April 24, 2024
Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area suggests that Black could be an option for San Francisco's rotation in the near future in the wake of Blake Snell's adductor strain.
ANALYSIS
Black missed out on the Giants' season-opening rotation but has a 1.53 ERA, 0.99 WHIP and 20:4 K:BB through four starts at Triple-A Sacramento, which could earn him a promotion soon. San Francisco doesn't necessarily need reinforcements immediately with scheduled off days Thursday and Monday, but a stretch of 16 straight games follows that and will require a full rotation. Snell seems likely to miss more than the 15-day minimum, which could set up Black to make his MLB debut in early May if San Francisco is willing to add him to the 40-man roster.
